Furret's name is a combination of ferret and furry. It is more similar to a ferret than Sentret. Its Japanese name is a combination of 大 ō, big, and 鼬 itachi, weasel, and may also include 尾 o, tail, and 立つ tatsu, stand, just like Sentret's Japanese name.

French: Fouinar - From fouine (beech marten); although the actual meaning implied by the corruption seems to be snoop.
