In each Pokémon game of Generation IX, all Pokémon have an unseen index number used to identify them in the game's ROM. The majority of them are in their National Pokédex order, deviating starting with Dudunsparce, whose index number is 917 but its position in the National Pokédex is 982.
Updates to the index number list are as follows:
- Prior to version 1.2.0 of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, index numbers 980 and 987 are not assigned to any Pokémon.
- Version 1.2.0 of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet added Walking Wake for 980 and Iron Leaves for 987.
- Version 2.0.1 of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet added new and returning Pokémon for The Teal Mask DLC, bringing the index count to 1025. As of this version, index numbers 1013 and 1017-1023 are not assigned to any Pokémon, but 1013 is listed as evolving from Dipplin.
- Version 3.0.0 of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet added new and returning Pokémon for The Indigo Disk DLC. The previously unassigned index numbers 1013 and 1017-1023 are assigned to the new Pokémon, thus the total index count remains unchanged.

Trivia
- This unusual ordering of Generation IX Pokémon is exposed when sorting the TM Materials pocket by type. For Pokémon with cross-generational Evolutions, the ordering is by the lowest Evolution stage's index number, except for Wooper Slime, which is the last in order because of Clodsire.
