Diamond and Pearl prepare to help Platinum train to earn her third Gym Badge. Pearl decides to lend his Monferno, Chimler, to her for the fight after he remembers Maylene saying that she looks forward to battling against it. He also lends her his Chatot, Chatler, knowing that Maylene's Fighting-type Pokémon will have a harder time battling it. Platinum trains hard to get accustomed to battling with Pearl's Pokémon, relying on her Pokédex to know their attacks.

Hours before the Gym battle, the group decides to take a break from training and go their separate ways. Platinum walks by the Veilstone Game Corner and looks in through the window, when suddenly, a man calls out to her. He encourages her to enter the casino, but she wants to follow through on the promise she made to Pearl. Despite her protests, the man pulls Platinum into the Game Corner.

When Diamond and Pearl finish another rehearsal of their comedy routine, they meet up with Platinum and see that she looks more tired than usual. Pearl assumes it is due to her dedication to train and commends her for it. The group departs for the Veilstone Gym.

To Diamond and Pearl's surprise, they are allowed to come with Platinum into the Gym, which is arranged in a large labyrinth that leads to Maylene. As they make their way through the maze, Pearl notices that Platinum seems unfocused. After battling Black Belts and solving the maze, they reach Maylene.

Right as the fight is about to begin, Platinum realizes that she is missing her Pokédex. Diamond asks where she left it and Platinum grows nervous. As Pearl watches in confusion, she whispers to Diamond that she left it at the casino.

Diamond runs off to get Platinum's Pokédex as Maylene sends her Riolu out at Monferno. The two exchange blows, seemingly equally matched. When Platinum tries to put some distance between them, Riolu uses a Force Palm to knock down Monferno. Riolu then uses Drain Punch to drain its opponent of its energy. Seeing Monferno struggling, Platinum withdraws it to send out Chatot. It uses a powerful Chatter attack, causing Riolu to signal Maylene's Meditite for help.

Maylene switches out Riolu for Meditite. It throws Chatot to the ground with Bullet Punch, then gets a critical hit with a Psycho Cut attack. Taking advantage of the powerful move, Platinum commands Chatot to use Mirror Move. Meditite is defeated by the attack, and Riolu rejoins the fight. Chatot is quickly knocked out with a Vacuum Wave, forcing Platinum to put Monferno up against Riolu once more. Determined to not lose to a rich kid like Platinum, Maylene has Riolu use Rock Smash on the ground of the arena, sending rocks flying all around them.

Meanwhile, Diamond visits the Game Corner to look for Platinum's Pokédex. After speaking with the manager, Diamond calls Pearl from the phone there. When Pearl learns Platinum was in the Game Corner, he realizes that is the reason she is so unfocused. Furious, he yells at Platinum in the middle of her battle, accusing her of not actually caring about challenging all of the Gyms. She denies playing the slot machines, but Pearl doesn't believe her.

As Riolu hurls rocks at Monferno, Platinum pauses. She has Monferno toss away the Zoom Lens it was using to help land attacks. Platinum focuses hard as she looks for an opening through the flying rocks. She motions her hand as if playing a slot machine, then gives Monferno the signal. Monferno charges towards Riolu and lands an attack that knocks it out, winning the battle.

Maylene compliments Platinum, and Pearl apologizes to her for not believing her. The doors burst open behind them and the man who had taken Platinum into the Game Corner enters. He confirms that Platinum only stayed to watch him play, studying the movements of the machine. The man is revealed to be Maylene's father, and Maylene grows annoyed with him, kicking him out of the Gym.

After hearing of Platinum's success from a phone call with Pearl, Diamond heads into the lost and found. He spots the missing Pokédex on a high shelf, but right as he reaches up to grab it, it is snatched away from him.
