As Blaine charges at Mewtwo on his Rapidash, he announces his plan: to break Mewtwo's Psywave with an attack using an equivalent amount of energy straight into the heart of the tornado, which he'll accomplish by attacking Mewtwo head on with his own body. As Blaine and Mewtwo make contact, causing an explosion. As the tornado clears, the fireball encasing Red dissipates as well, while Blaine drops limply to the ground.

Rushing over to his body, Blaine smiles, happy that Mewtwo has finally been dealt with. He reveals that he possesses the Master Ball, leaving Red in shock that he risked his life when he could have captured Mewtwo instead. Blaine explains that Mewtwo's power had grown so much that it was nearly impossible to get close enough to use it anyways, leaving the idea pointless. Blaine laughs to himself, pleased that Red has the same compassion in his eyes just as when they first met at the Team Rocket Hideout in Celadon City. Blaine talks about how at that point he had already abandoned his position as Gym Leader to work for Team Rocket, too curious about the science to pass up the opportunity. He had no issues experimenting on Pokémon like Gyarados and Eevee for his work, but comments that Red was different, willing to fight to protect Mew and managing to rehabilitate the Gyarados that had completely lost trust in humans.

Seeing the love and respect that Red had for Pokémon changed Blaine, leaving him ashamed of the work he's done, concluding that the only beast he had succeeded in creating was himself. He thanks Red for motivating him to become a traitor to Team Rocket and giving him the strength and courage to destroy Mewtwo, ensuring there will never be any more victims. Blaine's voice trails off, worrying Red as it seems like his consciousness is fading. Before he can offer any more help, a small rock strikes Red in the back of his head, catching his attention.

Mewtwo is still alive, clearly enraged and preparing to fight. Sending out Poli in an attempt to find Mewtwo's weaknesses, who is effortlessly struck away by a massive spoon formed from Psychic energy. Blaine is able to tell Red to take care of Mewtwo's abilities, able to adapt itself to any opponent. As he reiterates that Mewtwo is genetically engineered for battle, it rushes towards Red and strikes the earth with its spoon. Red quietly thinks to himself as Blaine considers the fight proof that there's nothing to be done besides destroying it. As he sends out all his Pokémon, Mewtwo switches back to using his tornado attack to deal with the large group. From above, Red and Pika are being carried by Aero, attempting to reach the center of the tornado before it can reach its full power. As Mewtwo blows away Red and Areo, Pika jumps from his shoulder, carrying the Master Ball between his teeth. Blaine is left astonished as Mewtwo is captured and the Master Ball falls to the ground.

Red gives Mewtwo to Blaine, hoping that it will be able to learn that not every human is cruel and ignorant, rhetorically asking Blaine what he thinks might happen if it learns something different, and asks him to find out. Running back over to his team, they all celebrate a successful battle, while Blaine contemplates the Pokémon inside of the Master Ball. Noticing that the pain in his arm is subsiding, he asks Mewtwo if its pain is clearing as well, wondering if they can really start over together. He's suddenly struck with something he hasn't thought of in a long time, the phrase Pokémon Trainer, a title that encapsulates someone like Red, willing to spend his life with Pokémon that he trusts and who trust him back. As Red helps Blaine back to civilization, he asks Red if one day they might like to have a battle together, Red promising to take him one once he's back to full health. Turning back forwards, Red and his Pokémon are on the way to the Indigo Plateau.
