Volkner (Japanese: デンジ Denzi) is the Gym Leader of Sunyshore City's Gym, known officially as the Sunyshore Gym. He hands out the Beacon Badge to Trainers who defeat him. He specializes in Electric-type Pokémon.

In the core series games

Volkner uses Electric-type Pokémon in his battles. Trainers who defeat him will receive the Beacon Badge, TM57 (Charge Beam), and will be able to use Waterfall outside of battle. In addition, all Pokémon, no matter what level, will obey them. Volkner is friends with Flint, and had become dejected and depressed because no worthy challengers had come to Sunyshore City in a while. He had been considering challenging the Elite Four and spent all his time renovating the Gym's electrical equipment, which put a strain on Sunyshore's power supply and caused rolling brownouts, which the player experiences when first arriving in Sunyshore. Apparently, Volkner built the Gym's electrical gear puzzle completely out of boredom. When the player arrives in Sunyshore City, Flint introduces them to Volkner, who agrees to hold off on challenging the Elite Four until after he battles the new challenger.

In Pokémon Platinum, Volkner and Flint appear at the entrance to the Battle Frontier and have a Double Battle against the player and the player's rival. Volkner can later be fought, like the other Sinnoh Gym Leaders, at the Battleground.

In Pokémon Black and White, when Shauntal is battled for a second time, she will occasionally quote a book that she wrote which says, "'Do you know Thunderbolt?' was his first greeting to me. It wasn't until after we battled that I learned his name was Volkner."

He also battles the player in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 in the Pokémon World Tournament.

Main series

Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl

Volkner grew up battling gangs and Pokémon poachers on the streets of Sunyshore City. He came across Flint and decided to challenge him to a battle, though he lost the match. Volkner challenged Flint sometime later and won, thus igniting an intense rivalry. The two later became friends after battling against the Proprietor in a Tag Battle. When Flint turned 20 he left Sunyshore to pursue his own journey, and eventually became a member of the Sinnoh Elite Four, while Volkner assumed the role of Sunyshore City's Gym Leader.

After becoming the Gym Leader, Volkner became more interested in technology and he distanced himself from battling. The obsession led him to design the automated walkways of Sunyshore, the installation of solar panels, and the city's famous Sunyshore Tower.

In Challenging a Towering Figure!, Volkner was first mentioned by Palmer, who said that, after seeing his battling skills, Ash would be able to give Volkner "a shock". In Fighting Ire with Fire!, Paul also hinted that something was amiss at the Sunyshore Gym, angrily denouncing it as "not legit".

In Flint Sparks the Fire!, when Ash arrived at the Sunyshore Gym, he was surprised that Volkner had installed a machine at the entrance that was simply giving away free Beacon Badges to Trainers. Ash was determined to have a genuine Gym battle so he began knocking on the door, only to be taken off the property by its robotic security. Flint noticed this and escorted Ash and his friends to Volkner's location at the Sunyshore Tower. Ash requested a battle from Volkner, but he declined and stated that he was bored.

Later, Volkner walked into the Proprietor's café and quickly began arguing with Flint. The Proprietor then suggested that Flint battle Ash instead, and requested that Volkner watch the match. After witnessing Ash's battle with Flint, he became interested in battling again and decided to accept Ash's challenge for a Gym battle.

Young Volkner with his Pikachu

In The Fleeing Tower of Sunyshore!, Volkner and Ash began their Gym battle. However, it was quickly interrupted as Team Rocket stole the Sunyshore Tower, causing a citywide blackout. After Ash defeated Team Rocket with the help of his newly evolved Torterra, Volkner returned the tower back to its original place. However, as both the tower and Gym were badly damaged, Volkner told Ash that he had to repair them before they could have a rematch. Ash agreed to the terms and said that he would use the extra time for more training.

In A Grand Fight for Winning!, Volkner sends a message to Nurse Joy to let Ash know that he was ready to do battle with him.

In The Eighth Wonder of the Sinnoh World!, Ash returned to Sunyshore to be the first to challenge Volkner since Team Rocket stole the Sunyshore Tower. During the last round between Infernape and Luxray, Infernape's Blaze Ability was activated once again. This time, however, Infernape was able to take control of his Ability, and by using the power that his Fire-type attacks had gained, he won the match. This earned Ash the Beacon Badge, thus allowing him to enter the Sinnoh League.

In Four Roads Diverged in a Pokémon Port!, Flint thanks Ash that it is because of him that Volkner has returned to being the Trainer he was before and has now returned to normal Gym activities.

Volkner made a cameo appearance in the ending credits of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

Volkner's silhouette was seen at the end of Thrash of the Titans!, where it was revealed he had entered the World Coronation Series.

In All Out, All of the Time!, it was revealed that Ash's next battle in the World Coronation Series was to be against Volkner, who was currently ranked 27th in the competition.

Volkner reappeared in Ultra Exciting from the Shocking Start!, where he had his World Coronation Series battle against Ash at the Sunyshore Gym. After a tough battle, Ash was able to defeat Volkner again and climb higher in the Ultra Class. Volkner predicted that Ash would become "the eye of the storm" in not only the Ultra Class, but even in the Master Class, where Cynthia was ranked.

In The Fiery Road to Mastership!, Volkner appeared watching the Masters Eight Tournament match between Cynthia and Iris alongside Flint on a Rotom Phone.

Character

Volkner and Flint

Volkner is renowned for being "electrifying" and nicknamed the "Shining Shocking Star of Sunyshore" because of his enthusiasm and technique in battle. He utilizes offense moves as a defensive strategy to counter an opponent's efforts. Volkner aims to attack his opponent's Pokémon at close range to ensure the most damage. He is regarded as bright and intelligent, though he is prone to becoming obsessed with his interests and tires of them when things become predictable.

However, after becoming the Sunyshore Gym Leader and experiencing numerous weak challengers, Volkner completely lost any interest in battling. Furthermore, Volkner became completely aloof and somewhat cold, always having an empty look on his face, and always speaking in a bored tone. His aloofness even went as far as boringly telling Flint to punch him if he felt like it after being threatened by the former, and Volkner's disinterest seemed to have extended towards his friends, as Volkner seemed to have gained some level of resentment towards Flint, once sarcastically referring to him as "Mr. Elite Four", possibly from the fact that Flint became able to travel whilst Volkner remained in Sunyshore City, surrounded by weak challengers.

After witnessing Ash putting himself in harm's way to protect his Pikachu, Volkner seemed to have finally snapped out of his disinterest, as Ash's actions reminded him of his own protective actions in his childhood regarding his Pikachu, and seeing Ash's determination, as well as hearing the Proprietor's speech about Volkner's determination causing him to abandon his ways as a Pokémon poacher, finally caused Volkner to reignite his battling spirit. Volkner also returned to his previously cheerful and confident self.

Since Ash's challenge in The Eighth Wonder of the Sinnoh World!, Flint reported that news of Volkner's return to battling spread quickly throughout the region, as countless potential challenger's were queuing to go up against him, although Volkner declined all of them, keeping his promise to have his first official return match against Ash.

He holds deep respect and immense sentiments for his hometown of Sunyshore. His technology projects and massive construction efforts were designed to highlight Sunyshore's best assets and separate it from its previously grimy and criminal gang history.

Japanese Satsuki Yukino (as Pikachu)
Chie Sato (as Raichu)
English Satsuki Yukino (as Pikachu)
Chie Sato (as Raichu)

Raichu is Volkner's very first Pokémon. He first appeared in Flint Sparks the Fire!, where he reunited with Flint, and in the next episode. Raichu has been shown to be outside of his Poké Ball most of the time.

Volkner first received his Raichu as a Pikachu when he was young. He battled with Flint's Chimchar and lost. However, in their rematch, Pikachu defeated Chimchar with Iron Tail. Since then, Flint and Volkner became friends and rivals. Later, Pikachu was battling the Proprietor's Houndoom, when the latter was a Pokémon poacher at the time. Houndoom dealt some damage to Chimchar and Pikachu, but Chimchar wasn't able to continue, leaving Pikachu to do it on its own. Volkner was very determined to battle the Proprietor. After a long battle, the Proprietor was defeated and became friends with Volkner and Flint.

Pikachu later evolved into a Raichu prior to Volkner becoming the Sunyshore City Gym Leader. Raichu was very strong as he defeated several Pokémon such as a Trainer's Weavile and Mothim over time. However, Volkner did not select Raichu in both of his matches against Ash.

Raichu briefly appeared alongside Volkner during the ending credits of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

Raichu's known moves are Iron Tail, Thunderbolt, Volt Tackle, and Thunder.

Luxray
Volkner's Luxray

Volkner's Luxray appeared for the first time in The Fleeing Tower of Sunyshore!, where he battled Ash's Grotle during Ash's Gym challenge. However, the battle was called off due to Team Rocket terrorizing the city.

During the rematch, Luxray first battled with Pikachu, and won after taking hits from several Iron Tails. Ash next used Infernape, which got badly injured during the battle. Due to this, his Ability Blaze got activated. However, this time Infernape was able to control his Ability, and with the powers gained through it, the Flame Pokémon quickly defeated Luxray, serving the final blow with a devastating Flame Wheel, earning Ash the Beacon Badge. Luxray was seen in a flashback in League Unleashed!.

Luxray reappeared in Ultra Exciting from the Shocking Start!, where he was the first Pokémon in Volkner's World Coronation Series match against Ash. Luxray first went up against Lucario and Gengar before being recalled. He later battled Lucario once more, with the battle ending in a tie.

Luxray's known moves are Spark, Thunder, Shock Wave, Thunder Fang, Double Team, Iron Tail, Electric Terrain, Rising Voltage, and Snarl.

Electivire
Volkner's Electivire

Electivire was the first Pokémon which Volkner used during his rematch against Ash. Ash first used Torterra, but it was easily defeated. Next Ash chose to use Pikachu. With his Thunderbolt, Pikachu triggered Electivire's Ability, making it an even harder target to hit. However, when one of Electivire's punches connected with Pikachu, the Thunderbolt Pokémon was paralyzed by Pikachu's Static. After this, Pikachu was able to finish Electivire with a well-aimed Iron Tail.

Electivire reappeared in Ultra Exciting from the Shocking Start!, when it was the third Pokémon in his World Coronation Series match against Ash. It was used to negate Pikachu's Thunderbolt with its Motor Drive Ability. After Pikachu, it briefly battled Ash's Lucario before being recalled. Electivire later battled Ash's Pikachu again, but it was eventually defeated by Pikachu's 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt, which proved to be too much for Motor Drive to absorb.

In The Fiery Road to Mastership!, Electivire was shown watching Cynthia's Masters Eight Tournament match against Iris alongside its Trainer.

Electivire's known moves are Fire Punch, Ice Punch, Iron Tail, Wild Charge, and Thunder Punch, and its Ability is Motor Drive.

Jolteon
Volkner's Jolteon

Jolteon was the second Pokémon used by Volkner during his and Ash's rematch. It has impressive agility and was shown to be able to use consecutive Shadow Ball attacks. Ash chose to use his Infernape, which soon defeated the Lightning Pokémon with a Mach Punch.

Jolteon's known moves are Thunderbolt and Shadow Ball.

Rotom
Volkner's Rotom

Rotom was the second Pokémon used by Volkner in his World Coronation Series match against Ash. After using Thunder Wave on Gengar, Rotom was able to defeat it with Hex. Rotom was recalled when Pikachu trapped it with Electroweb and was about to use Thunderbolt on it. Later, Rotom battled against Lucario, weakening it with Hex after it was paralyzed, only to be defeated by a Reversal.

Rotom's known moves are Air Slash, Thunder Wave, and Hex.

Diamond & Pearl arc

After Team Galactic captures the Lake trio and defeats Candice, Maylene, and Platinum, Candice and Maylene demand that Byron send someone strong to train them. Because Byron is occupied with protecting Professor Rowan and Mr. Berlitz, he briefly considers sending Roark, but realizes that Roark will not be strong enough and tries to call Volkner instead.

The call initially does not go through because Sunyshore City is in the middle of a blackout caused by Volkner's Gym renovations. Volkner, depressed that Pokémon battles have become boring as a result of few strong opponents challenging him, elects to leave the Gym when Byron's call gets through.

When Volkner meets Platinum and the two female Gym Leaders, he initially mistakes Platinum as another Gym Leader, indicating that he is quite distant from his colleagues. He attacks them and leaves immediately, as none of them appear strong enough to interest him. Platinum's sincere dedication to impressing him and to inform him of Jupiter's prowess interests Volkner enough for him to send out his Electivire to battle her. He then promises that if she defeats him, he will award her the Beacon Badge. Eventually, the girl succeeds, and he yields it to her. He also gives a Pachirisu to Maylene so she can give it to Platinum while they go off to battle Team Galactic on the Spear Pillar.

While the other Gym Leaders battle Team Galactic on Spear Pillar, Volkner ignores their calls for help and prepares to go home. Before he can leave, Volkner encounters a strange distortion in space right in front of the Sendoff Spring. Feeling excited from this discovery, Volkner calls his friend Flint to help him investigate it.

Platinum arc

He and Flint are seen researching about the strange phenomenon when Flint gets a call from Buck. Later, Volkner and Flint witness Platinum and her friends traveling to the Distortion World. Volkner teases Flint about caring that his younger brother has been injured, though Flint denies it and intends to defeat the person that beat Buck. Later, they arrive at the Sendoff Spring, and enter the Distortion World through the Turnback Cave.

Upon arriving, they are attacked by Giratina and are chased throughout the Distortion World by it. Despite them using a powerful combination attack, Giratina proves too powerful for them and defeats the two with a Dragon Breath. They manage to get up soon after, only for Giratina to leave to fight the other Legendary Pokémon in the area.

After Charon is defeated, Giratina tries one last time to attack Platinum, only for Flint and Volkner to attack it from behind and defeat it. Satisfied, the two hi-five each other in a prideful boast of their strength.

Black & White arc

In A Stormy Time in the Battle Subway, Shauntal was shown to have included a picture and a written passage of Volkner in her book.

Electivire
Volkner's Electivire

Electivire was the third Pokémon seen on Volkner's team. Trivia

The Double Battle against Flint and Volkner
  • Volkner's Japanese Leader title is かがやき しびれさせる スター.
  • Volkner and Jasmine have many similarities:
    • They are both Gym Leaders.
    • The cities they both reside in, Olivine City and Sunyshore City, are coastal and have lighthouses: the Olivine Lighthouse and the Vista Lighthouse.
      • In all Sinnoh-based games, they both can be talked to in Sunyshore City, and Jasmine herself notes the similarities between the two cities.
    • They both are in their respective lighthouse when the player first meets them.
    • Something stops both Jasmine and Volkner from battling the player in the beginning: Jasmine's Ampharos is ill, so the player has to get the SecretPotion to heal it, and there is a power outage in Sunyshore City, so the player can't reach it until the player has dealt with Team Galactic.
  • All of Volkner's Diamond and Pearl Pokémon belong to species that have gender differences.
  • In Diamond, Pearl, Brilliant Diamond, and Shining Pearl, two of Volkner's four Pokémon, Ambipom and Octillery, are not of his specialty type, though each know one Electric-type move (Shock WaveDP/ThunderboltBDSP and Charge Beam, respectively). This was changed in Platinum, as they were replaced by Jolteon and Electivire.
  • Volkner's Electivire is the only Pokémon of a Gym Leader to use Seals in Platinum. It is used in the initial Gym Battle, the subsequent rematches, and in the Double Battle with Flint, who uses his Magmortar, the only Pokémon of an Elite Four member to have Seals.
  • Volkner is the only Sinnoh Gym Leader to not have any Pokémon with more than one type in Diamond and Pearl.
    • He also does not use any Pokémon with more than one type in the initial battle in Platinum, but he uses a Lanturn in the post-game rematches at the Battleground.
  • In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Volkner is the only Gym Leader to use a Pokémon whose type does not match his type speciality in his rematch team.
  • In the anime, Volkner is the only Gym Leader:
    • From Sinnoh who used his in-game party from Platinum.
    • From Sinnoh who Ash battled more than two times.
    • Who Ash battled as the eighth one to use a fully evolved team.
  • In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Volkner's Luxray knows Play Rough, which it cannot legitimately learn in those games. It is only able to learn it via TR90 in Sword and Shield, and will not maintain it if transferred to Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl via Pokémon HOME.
