== Goldenrod City ==

Welcome to {{ci|Goldenrod}}, the largest metropolis in Johto and sister city to {{ci|Saffron}} in Kanto. This sprawling city boasts a handful of major attractions, including a [[Goldenrod Gym|Pokémon Gym]], Bike Shop, Game Corner, {{jo|Radio Tower}}, and [[Goldenrod Department Store|Department Store]]. With so much going on, it's easy to get overlook any shady events.  But with a [[Team Rocket]] grunt keeping tabs on the Radio Tower, expect to return here to save the city from the Rockets' underhanded schemes.

But first thing's first: let's see the sights!

=== Bike Shop ===
The Bike Shop has moved to the city's southeast neighborhood from [[Cerulean City]] in Kanto, but business doesn't seem to be doing very well. The owner has a proposal, though—he'll loan you a [[Bicycle]], and with all the traveling that you're doing, the advertising will generate interest, and business will pick up. Riding the bike is faster than traveling on foot, and he gains new customers—everybody's happy!

=== Game Corner ===
Unlike {{ci|Celadon}}'s [[Rocket Game Corner|Game Corner]], this one is not hiding a secret entrance to a Rocket underground base. Unfortunately, the games are off-limits without a [[Coin Case]], so Trainers who want to try their luck will have to track one down. Leave the Game Corner and walk southwest, and enter the building with the "Underground Entrance" sign.

=== Goldenrod Underground ===

The Underground is a tunnel stretching north/south under the western part of the city, with a small access hallway leading to the basement of the Department Store. Just beyond the first two Trainers, the underground hallway widens, allowing more room for the three shops here. Examine the item around the corner from the second Trainer to find a [[Coin Case]]. With a new Coin Case, Trainers are free to purchase coins at the Game Corner; 50 coins for {{pdollar}}1000, 500 coins for {{pdollar}}10000.

* The northern {{DL|Valuable item|Bargain Shop|shop}} is only open on Monday mornings, 4am - 9am. This merchant deals in valuable items, while having no use themselves, they can be resold elsewhere for decent profit. Trainers with money to spare may want to shop here; buying a few of these items will keep them from losing much money if an entire team faints in battle.

* The Pokémon Salon, the center shop, is operated by two brothers. Their services will raise a Pokémon's happiness, though at different rates. The younger brother works on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday, and charges {{pdollar}}300; the older brother works on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday and charges {{pdollar}}500.  Neither brother works on a Monday.

* The [[Herb Shop]], the southern-most shop, sells medicinal herbs that heal or revive Pokémon and are cheaper than their [[Poké Mart]] counterparts. The downside to this is that Pokémon do not enjoy having these herbal items used on them, so their happiness rating will decrease as a result.  This shop is only open on weekends.

=== Bill's house ===

[[Bill]], the inventor of the Pokémon PC Storage system, lives on the city's western coast with his mother and sister. He is currently away on business in [[Ecruteak City]], but his sister will give his phone number out to visiting Trainers. This is a useful way to check how many Pokémon are stored in the current box. After meeting him in Ecruteak, he returns home to {{ci|Goldenrod}}. Stop by his house afterwards and he will give you {{p|Eevee|a gift}}.

=== Name Rater ===

The [[Name Rater]] lives in the house to the west of the [[Goldenrod Gym]]. Like his counterpart in [[Lavender Town]], the [[Name Rater]] evaluates a Pokémon's nickname, and allows Trainers to think up new nicknames for them.

=== Mood Tester ===

There are {{DL|Happiness|Evolutions|certain Pokémon}}, like {{p|Espeon}} and {{p|Umbreon}}, that can only be acquired when a Pokémon is happy with its Trainer.  The woman in the house near the Bike Shop will evaluate the happiness rating of a Trainer's first Pokémon. There are {{DL|Happiness|Generation II|many things}} that a Trainer can do in order to raise a Pokémon's happiness, like [[Haircut brothers|grooming]] it or using [[vitamins]] on it.

=== Radio Tower ===

Step inside the [[Goldenrod Radio Tower|Radio Tower]] by the [[Magnet Train|train station]].  The man behind the counter allows Trainers to draw a lottery ticket, and hands out prizes if any numbers match the Trainer's ID number. Trainers that speak with the green-haired woman behind the counter will be asked to participate in a quiz - answer the 5 questions correctly (<i>Yes, Yes, No, Yes, No</i>) to win a {{DL|Pokégear|Radio|Radio Card}} for the [[Pokégear]] as a prize.

There are numerous shows broadcasted, with the most prominent being Oak's Pokémon Talk, Pokémon Music Channel, and Buena's Password.  {{DL|Goldenrod Radio Tower|Broadcasted shows|More shows become available later}}.

* <i> [[Professor Oak's Pokémon Talk]] </i> - Channel 4.5
:[[Professor Oak]], with commentary by [[DJ Mary]], gives tips on where Trainers can find different Pokémon species.
* <i> [[Pokémon Music Channel]] </i> - Channel 7.5
:Hosted by [[DJ Ben]], this channel broadcasts two different pieces of music (depending on the day of the week) that affect how often wild Pokémon will appear.
::The Pokémon March plays upbeat music that increases the chance of encountering wild Pokémon.
::The Pokémon Lullaby plays soothing music that decreases the chance of encountering wild Pokémon.

* <i> [[Lucky Channel]] </i> - Channel 8.5
:Hosted by DJ [[Reed]], this show broadcasts a random [[Original Trainer|OT]] [[Trainer ID number|number]], and if any of a Trainer's Pokémon match that number, they can show it to the man on the Radio Tower's ground floor to receive a {{DL|Poké Ball|Generation I Poké Balls|Master Ball}}. The lottery number changes every Friday.

=== Magnet Train Station ===

Next to the {{jo|Radio Tower}} is the [[Magnet Train|Magnet Train Station]]. Currently shut down, this bullet train normally [[Transportation in Pokémon|runs]] between Johto's {{ci|Goldenrod}} and Kanto's {{ci|Saffron}} 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is the quickest way to travel from one region to the other, since the only other method (boarding the [[S.S. Aqua]] in {{ci|Olivine}} and sailing to {{ci|Vermilion}}) runs much less frequently, making the [[Magnet Train]] the ideal method of transportation.

=== Goldenrod Dept. Store ===

Located just east of the Poké Center, the [[Goldenrod Department Store]] is the largest shop in Johto (eight floors counting the rooftop and basement), and has a wide array of items on sale.

==== Basement ====
While there are no shops in the basement, taking the elevator downstairs will allow Trainers to find an [[Ultra Ball]], a [[Burn Heal]], and an [[Ether]] lying around.

==== 2nd floor ====
The "Trainer's Market" sells basic equipment and items that Trainers may need during their journeys.

==== 5th floor ====
The "TM Corner" located on the fifth floor offers a handful of different [[TM]]s for Trainers to use. <br>
On Sundays, there is a second shopkeeper working here, and she will give Trainers {{TM|27|Return}} if their lead Pokémon is [[Happiness|happy]], and {{TM|21|Frustration}} if it is unhappy.  Speaking with the little girl here unlocks the ''[[Mystery Gift]]'' option.  There is also a man here who is willing to trade his {{p|Drowzee}} for a {{p|Machop}}.  Taking him up on his offer will help you out in the long run, since the Goldenrod Gym is devoted to {{type2|Normal}}s.

You will only be able to purchase {{TM|08|Rock Smash}} after obtaining it on {{rt|36|Johto}}.

==== Rooftop ====
Exclusive to {{v|Crystal}}, you are unable to reach the top floor by way of the elevator; instead, you'll need to climb the final flight of stairs.  While there isn't much going on here now, occasionally a Rooftop Sale will be in effect, offering a small selection of discounted high-demand items.  If you trade numbers with Camper Todd, he will call to tell you when the sales are going on.

The [[Goldenrod Gym]] is devoted to {{type2|Normal}}s.  {{type2|Fighting}} Pokémon, like {{p|Machop}}, are the only elemental type to receive a power bonus when battling <br> Normal-types.  {{type2|Ghost}}s, like {{p|Gastly}}, don't receive a power bonus, but they are immune to Normal-type attacks.

After defeating her, [[Whitney]] sobs uncontrollably, ignoring you altogether. With no badge, you turn to leave—but Lass Bridget stops you. She talks to Whitney, and the Gym Leader finally gives up the {{badge|Plain}}, which gives a {{stat|Speed}} boost to your team, and enables the use of {{m|Strength}} outside of battle. She also gives you {{TM|45|Attract}} as a prize.

=== Goldenrod Flower Shop ===
Once you meet Floria near the {{p|Sudowoodo|wiggly tree}} on {{rt|36|Johto}}, get back here and talk to the two women to receive the {{DL|List of key items in Generation II|SquirtBottle}}.  Using this watering can on the odd tree will make it squirm around to actually avoid the water.  An oddity, but Trainers with three badges should have no trouble approaching it.

Head north to reach {{rt|35|Johto}}.
