The '''HP''' (Japanese: '''{{tt|HP|エイチピー}}'''), short for '''Hit Point''' (Japanese: '''{{j|ヒットポイント}}''' ''Hit Point''), represents the health of each {{TCG|Pokémon}} card. This value is based on the Pokémon's [[HP]] from the {{pkmn|games}}.

==Terminology==
The {{pkmn|Trading Card Game}} Rulebook usually uses the abbreviation "HP" in running text rather than "Hit Points". In the [https://assets.pokemon.com//assets/cms2/pdf/trading-card-game/rulebook/swsh3_rulebook_en.pdf latest 2020 version] of this rulebook, "Hit Points" is not used outside of the Glossary section explaining Pokémon TCG terms. Both words in "Hit Points" start with capital letters in official material.

The "HP" abbreviation is seen with the HP value in Pokémon cards. In some cases, the "HP" abbreviation is also used in the text explaining the card's effects, such as in the cards {{OBP|Heat F Energy|Darkness Ablaze 174}} ("The {{e|Fire}} Pokémon this card is attached to gets +20 HP."), {{OBP|Shedinja|Vivid Voltage 66}} ("Put damage counters on your opponent's Active Pokémon until its remaining HP is 10."), {{OBP|Galarian Stunfisk V|Darkness Ablaze 128}}, {{OBP|Hero's Medal|Vivid Voltage 152}}, and so on.

{{OBP|Ditto|Fossil 3}} is the only card that mentions "Hit Points" instead of "HP" in its English text. The "Hit Points" are mentioned in the description of Ditto's Transform attack: "treat it as if it were the same card as the Defending Pokémon, including type, Hit Points, Weakness, and so on".

==Overview==
Each {{TCG|Pokémon}} card has a HP value printed at the top-right corner. This value is a multiple of 10. Different Pokémon cards often have a different HP even if they represent the same Pokémon species. For instance, several {{TCG|Pikachu|Pikachu cards}} have 40, 50, 60, or 70 HP, depending on the card.

A Pokémon's damage is tallied up by way of damage counters, each counter representing 10 damage. For example, if a Pokémon with 120 HP has 3 damage counters, that is equivalent to 30 HP damage, with 90 HP still remaining for this Pokémon. If a Pokémon has lost all their HP (for instance, a Pokémon with 120 HP with twelve or more damage counters on it), it is Knocked Out. Once a Pokémon card is Knocked Out, it and all cards attached are sent to the discard pile, and the opponent takes one of their Prize cards.

Some {{TCG|Ability|Abilities}} and [[List of Pokémon Tool cards|Pokémon Tool cards]] increase a Pokémon's HP, although these effects are usually temporary and only give an extra 10-30 HP.

Some Pokémon cards with low HP include unevolved Pokémon such as {{TCG|Magikarp}}, as well as {{TCG|Baby Pokémon}}. Some Pokémon cards with high HP include {{TCG|Pokémon-EX}}, {{TCG|Pokémon-GX}}, {{TCG|Pokémon LV.X}}, and {{TCG|Pokémon V|Pokémon VMAX}} cards.

Some {{TCG|Trainer card|Trainer cards}} can also be played like Pokémon cards. These Trainer cards have some HP as well. If they are Knocked Out, they don't count as Knocked Out Pokémon, and the opposing player does not get a Prize card.

The Japanese card {{OBP|Dance! Neo Imakuni?|CD promo}} includes an HP number, but cannot be played as a Pokémon. The word "ウソ" (lie) points to the card's HP, indicating that the HP is a lie.
