Release information
This card was reprinted in Base Set 2, as well as the Hanada, Kuchiba, Tamamushi, and Yamabuki City Gym theme decks, and the Totodile Side Deck of the Neo Introduction Set. It was later reprinted in the Undaunted expansion with new artwork by Ryo Ueda, originating in the Reviving Legends expansion. It was given an errata alongside the release of Black and White so that it now protects against damage from all attacks, not just opponents' attacks.
An errata released alongside Black and White says that the card should read "by attacks" instead of "by an opponent's attack".

Defender's Japanese name is that of the X Defend, an item in the Pokémon games. The Japanese name of the item was either used for the English card by mistake, or was intentionally used as 'Defender' is inscribed on the side of the object in the card's original artwork.
