If a Pokémon is grounded, it can be affected by Ground-type attacks and several other effects.
Ungrounded Pokémon
Several characteristics may make a Pokémon ungrounded.
A Pokémon is ungrounded if it:
- is Flying-type,
- has the Ability Levitate,
- is holding an Air Balloon,
- is under the effect of Magnet Rise, or
- is under the effect of Telekinesis.
Grounded Pokémon
By default, grounded Pokémon are simply those that are not ungrounded. However, there are also several effects that will negate a Pokémon's ungrounded status, making it grounded.
A Pokémon will be grounded if it:
- is holding an Iron Ball,
- is under the effect of Ingrain,
- is under the effect of Smack Down,
- is under the effect of Gravity, or
- has its Levitate ability nullified by Gastro Acid, Skill Swap, or the like, provided its ability was the only thing ungrounding it
In addition, the move Roost will negate the user's Flying type for one turn, meaning it will become grounded for that turn if its type was the only thing making it ungrounded.
Immunities of ungrounded Pokémon
Ungrounded Pokémon are immune to all damaging Ground-type attacks.
Ungrounded Pokémon are also immune to:
- the entry hazards Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and Sticky Web;
- the terrain-altering moves Misty Terrain, Grassy Terrain, and Electric Terrain; and
- the Ability Arena Trap;
Also, if a grounded Poison-type Pokémon is sent out while Toxic Spikes are on that Pokémon's side of the field, it will remove them; if the Poison-type Pokémon is ungrounded, the Toxic Spikes will remain.
