{{../Edit}} In all generations, key items can be registered (Japanese: ) to a button for use in the overworld without going through the Bag.

- Key items that bring up an interface (such as the Town Map or Dowsing MCHN)
- Key items that can be used in the overworld (such as watering cans, fishing rods, and Bicycles)
- Some menu screensBWB2W2
Differences between generations
Generation I–III
One key item can be registered to the Select button.
Generation IV
Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum
One key item can be registered to the Y button.
Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver
Up to two key items can be registered at a time. The first item registered can be accessed through the Y button, while both can be accessed on the Touch Screen.
Generation V
The Generation V games have a Ready button (Japanese: 便利ボタン handy button) that allows access to registered functions and items. It is managed by adding or removing checkmarks to the boxes at the bottom of the Pokémon List, Pokédex, Bag, Trainer Card, or Options. Registrable key items will also have a checkbox next to the item in the Bag. It is accessed using the Y button.
If only one entry is registered, it acts the same as in previous generations and does not bring up the Ready button interface. The button's list is limited to 34 entries which can be rearranged by pressing SELECT.
Generation VI
Up to four key items can be registered to the Y button. If more than one item is registered, the D-Pad is used to choose one of the items.
