He had become fascinated by the Japanese entertainment culture after watching anime and reading manga as a child, and thus traveled to Japan in order to become a voice actor. In 2001, at the age of 18, Kakihara attended the Amusement Media Academy, a Japanese vocational voice acting school, and had to live at a friend's home while studying there. He also worked a number of part-time jobs and improved his Japanese during this time. Kakihara eventually started voicing roles in 2003.
