Rather than a nut, does anyone else think that Forretress could pull inspiration from iron-oxide concretions? This may explain why Brock has one in the anime.
While iron-oxide concretions come in many, often bizarre shapes (some even have "nozzles," though this aspect may pull more from giant clams), they can also be round and are often confused for fossil nuts or shells. They're formed in layers, much like Forretress' shell is composed of compressed layers of bark and, like Forretress' red or yellow (if Shiny) core, can contain soft red or yellow minerals like hematite and limonite.

Weird coloring in my game...

Name Origin
