Trio master is a fan term referring to a Pokémon that, in some way, oversees a Legendary trio of Pokémon.

The trio master and the trio itself may relate in different ways. For example, Lugia is the trio master of the Legendary birds; it is the only one who can quell their fighting when Lawrence III captures one of them in The Power of One.

A trio master can be a member of the Legendary trio itself, serving as its internal master; for example, Rayquaza is the internal master of the super-ancient Pokémon—it quelled the other two members' conflicting in Emerald (as well as Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire's Delta Episode). Another example of an internal master situation occurs in the black and white games,Landorus is seen quelling Thunderus and Tornadus's fight on route 7,Unova, before the three legends become roaming Legendaries. This is significant, because, even if they're not a trio anymore, the forces of nature behaved as so, for 3 whole generations before getting a fourth member to thier group, turning them into a quartet.

Catching trio masters
In the games, the trio master sometimes will require that the members of its Legendary trio be caught beforehand. There has been other ways from which the trio master is referred to as such though.

Pokémon Crystal
In Crystal, Ho-Oh cannot be caught until all three of the Legendary beasts have been caught in the same game.

Pokémon Colosseum
In Pokémon Colosseum, if the player has snagged and purified all of the Shadow Pokémon, including the Legendary beasts, and achieved a 100 win streak at Mt. Battle, a Ho-Oh will be delivered to the player's PC.

Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness
In , the Legendary birds are encountered after the player encounters Shadow Lugia.

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver
In , Rayquaza is only obtainable after both Kyogre and Groudon have been obtained in the same game, which requires trading.

Pokémon Black and White
In , Landorus is only obtainable after both Tornadus and Thundurus have been obtained in the same game, which also requires trading.

Pokémon Black 2 and White 2
In , Regigigas will not awaken unless the player brings the Legendary giants to its resting place, Twist Mountain.

Pokémon X and Y
In X and Y, the name of the cave where the Legendary birds retreat after being encountered ten times roaming in Kalos alludes to Lugia.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Regigigas can be encountered in the Island Cave if the player has a nicknamed Regice holding a "cold item" (a Casteliacone, an Icy Rock, a Never-Melt Ice or a Snowball), Registeel, and Regirock in their party. However, the player can only battle Regigigas during the day after defeating/catching Groudon/Kyogre.

Landorus can only be encountered while soaring if the player has both Tornadus and Thundurus in the party, which also requires trading.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Rayquaza can only be encountered via Ultra Warp Ride if the player has both Kyogre and Groudon in the party, which requires trading. However, Kyogre and Groudon could be obtained through Mystery Gift without trading in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, respectively.

Landorus can only be encountered via Ultra Warp Ride if the player has both Tornadus and Thundurus in the party, which also requires trading. However, Thundurus and Tornadus could be obtained through Mystery Gift without trading in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, respectively.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Regigigas will not awaken unless the player brings the giants to its resting place, Snowpoint Temple.

In Brilliant Diamond, Ho-Oh cannot be caught until all three of the Legendary beasts have been caught.

In Shining Pearl, Lugia cannot be caught until all three of the Legendary birds have been caught.

Other references to trio masters
* In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, the Legendary birds must all be befriended and must create the Vortex Stone before the player can enter Lugia's dungeon, and before encountering Ho-Oh, the three Legendary beasts must contribute their power to create the Rainbow Wing.
* In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness and Explorers of Sky, Aegis Cave has four bosses: Regirock, Regice, Registeel and Regigigas. The giants must be beaten first before Regigigas can be challenged at the end of the cave.
* In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, the player needs to befriend all the Pokémon in the regional Browser, which includes the Legendary giants, to battle Regigigas. The giants themselves are also required in order to open the door to its domain.
