Held item
It contains a freely written message with up to 32 characters written across two 16-character rows of text. The player writes the message when giving this item to be held by a Pokémon. Mail uses a unique text entry interface that has a wider selection of characters than other text entry interfaces in these games. The message can be sent to other games of the same generation by trading the Pokémon holding this item.
The message remains available as long as this item is held by a Pokémon or stored in the Mailbox. This item is unable to have any message when stored in the Bag or in the Item Storage System, but there is the option to delete any existing message when storing this item in these places. Once the message is deleted from this item, the player is able to reuse it with a new message. A Pokémon holding this item cannot be placed in the PC or in the Pokémon Day Care.
This item cannot be stolen by Thief.
On the Game Boy Color, the message can be printed in grayscale using the Game Boy Printer accessory. The printing feature is accessed by pressing Start when the message is displayed.
On the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console, when the player attempts to enter the Trade Center while one of the Pokémon in their party is holding Mail, they are given a warning on the touch screen not to include offensive material in Mail. The printing feature is disabled on the Virtual Console.
Other uses
In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, a Flower Mail can be delivered from Route 35 to Route 31 to receive TM50 (Nightmare). While it is originally held by a Spearow, the player can deliver the mail with any Pokémon. Reporting the successful delivery also earns the player an HP Up.
In the western version of Pokémon Crystal, a Flower Mail can be traded for a Revive at the Goldenrod Pokémon Center.
