In 1998, [[Shogakukan]]'s [[CoroCoro]] magazine ran a promotion referred to as the "Tamamushi University Hyper Test". Readers could enter a competition for various promotional items by submitting answers to a set of questions. There were approximately 1,000 prize bundles which were distributed to readers who scored highly on their tests. The prize bundle included Encyclopedia Pokemonica, a [[Magikarp (University promo)|promotional Magikarp card]], two personalized pencils, and a Tamushi University student ID card.
In Japan, Shogakukan publishes a series of educational magazines known as the Shogakukan Learning Magazines. There is a separate magazine for each grade in elementary school, from 1st Grade to 6th Grade; these magazines are simply titled ''Elementary School 1st Grade'', etc. From the April 1998 issue (published March 1998) to the March 1999 issue (published February 1999), all six of the Shogakukan Learning Magazines ran the Tamamushi University campaign, in which students theoretically enrolled in the fictional Tamamushi University, taking exams distributed in the magazines in order for a chance to win prizes.

Encyclopedia Pokemonica is a very small book, not more than 15 cm by 10 cm in dimensions, as it is designed to fit in the reader's pocket. It intends to act as a real Japanese student handbook with legitimate use to the reader.
