Out of these referential categories, one challenge sticks out, "Trade Staryu and Luvdisc!" It's been suggested to me that this just be a reference to the popular design of hearts and stars but I feel like there's something more interesting in there. In Staryu's alola pokedex entries, it does mention fish nibbling on its limbs, which likely includes luvdisc, but its not a real specific connection. | Out of these referential categories, one challenge sticks out, "Trade Staryu and Luvdisc!" Every other challenge in the Trade category which involves specific Pokémon is very clearly a reference to something. These connections are usually pretty obvious, being: Regional Forms ("Trade Arcanine and Hisuian Arcanine!", "Trade Avalugg and Hisuian Avalugg", "Trade Braviary and Hisuian Braviary!", "Trade Corsola and Galarian Corsola!", "Trade Darmanitan and Galarian Darmanitan!", "Trade Electrode and Hisuian Electrode!", "Trade Farfetch'd and Galarian Farfetch'd!", "Trade Goodra and Hisuian Goodra!", "Trade Lilligant and Hisuian Lilligant", "Trade Linoone and Galarian Linoone!", "Trade Meowth and Galarian Meowth!", "Trade Mr. Mime and Galarian Mr. Mime!", "Trade Qwilfish and Hisuian Qwilfish!", "Trade Rapidash and Galarian Rapidash!" "Trade Slowking and Galarian Slowking!", "Trade Stunfisk and Galarian Stunfisk!", "Trade Vulpix and Alolan Vulpix!", "Trade Weezing and Galarian Weezing!", "Trade Yamask and Galarian Yamask!", and "Trade Zoroark and Hisuian Zoroark!") Regional Evolutions and their counterparts ("Trade Quagsire and Clodsire!", "Trade Scizor and Kleavor"*) Ecologically Similar Pokémon ("Trade Dugtrio and Wugtrio!", "Trade Polteagiest and Sinistcha!", "Trade Tentacruel and Toedscruel!") Version-Exclusive Pokémon/Pokémon with an established relationship ("Trade Armarouge and Ceruledge!", "Trade Cranidos and Shieldon!", "Trade Electivire and Magmortar!", "Trade Great Tusk and Iron Treads!", "Trade Koraidon and Miraidon!", "Trade Latias and Latios!", "Trade Lunatone and Solrock!", "Trade Pikachu and Mimikyu!", "Trade Pinsir and Heracross!", "Trade Plusle and Minun!", "Trade Roaring Moon and Iron Valiant!", "Trade Slither Wing and Iron Moth!", "Trade Throh and Sawk!", "Trade Zangoose and Seviper!") Members of the Same Evolutionary Family ("Trade Gardevoir and Gallade!", "Trade Glalie and Froslass!", "Trade Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan!") Significant Gender Variations ("Trade male Basculegion and female Basculegion!", "Trade male Meowstic and female Meowstic!", "Trade Nidoqueen and Nidoking!") General References ("Trade Nidorina and Gengar!" - Referencing the iconic battle from the rbgy games, "Trade Voltorb and Foongus!" - Both Pokémon resemble a Pokéball) Out of these referential categories, one challenge sticks out, "Trade Staryu and Luvdisc!" It's been suggested to me that this just be a reference to the popular design of hearts and stars but I feel like there's something more interesting in there. In Staryu's alola pokedex entries, it does mention fish nibbling on its limbs, which likely includes luvdisc, but its not a real specific connection.

- Thanks for the suggestion! Flew over my head while writing the first comment.
- After a bit of research, I've found a few similarities, although it's mainly in acquisition. They both appear in Summerland's Marine Challenge (Pokemon Ranger). They also both are commonly Super Rod Encounters, with a couple other instances of being encountered through an old rod, good rod, and surfing, but they don't commonly share an encounter table.
- Where they do share a location are: Pal Park (Sea), Black and White (Route 13), Black 2 and White 2 (Route 13, Undella Town, Humilau City), Dream World (Sparkling Sea), X and Y (Route 8), Pinball R&S (Ocean (Ruby Field)), Trozei! (Phobos Submarine, Mr. Who's Den), MD Red and Blue (Silver Trench* (Luvdisc is significantly further down than Staryu), Rumble Blast (Beach* (not the same area of Beach)), MD DX (Silver Trench* (Luvdisc is significantly further down than Staryu).
- They also both commonly hold high-value items to sell in Stardust/Star Pieces and Heart Scales, respectively.
- While I'm rattling off random similarities, they also both share a Base Defense of 55, a Power of 1 in Pokéathlon, a Defense of 2 and Speed of 3 in Pokémon Rumble Blast, Base Speed of 60 in Pokémon Rumble Rush, Attack Power of 1 star in Pokémon Battle Trozei, Attack Power and Enhancement Cost in Pokémon Shuffle, a Poké Assist in Pokémon Ranger and Field Move in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, a Fast Attack in Pokémon GO (Water Gun).
- In the anime, both Misty and Juan have at least one Staryu and Luvdisc. They also both appear in the Series Pokémon Journeys: The Series (manga) in the chapter "Legend? Check! Friends? Check!"
- Also, Staryu is one of 3 genderless Pokemon which can learn attract in gen II, and Luvdisc is very commonly associated with love. I haven't seen much of the anime or manga so I can't really speak to their interaction in those medias but I think the connection may be a common catch method, as they do share a common encounter method in most mainline games.
