Grusha (Japanese: グルーシャ Grusha) is the Gym Leader of Glaseado Mountain's Gym, known officially as the Glaseado Gym. He specializes in Ice-type Pokémon. He appears as a recurring supporting character in Pokémon Horizons: The Series.

History

Pre-series

The injury that Grusha to retire

In the past, Grusha was a professional snowboarder, winning several snowboarding tournaments. One day, while snowboarding, Grusha's path was accidentally blocked by a wandering Cetoddle, forcing him to perform an abrupt swerve that ended up injuring his leg, forcing him to retire from snowboarding. When he came out of the hospital, Grusha saw the same Cetoddle watching him from afar, clearly guilt-ridden over its involvement in his injury, but Grusha comforted the Ice-type and assured he wasn't upset. Without being able to return to his career, Grusha caught Cetoddle to begin his career as a Pokémon Trainer. Eventually, through sheer hard work and dicipline, Grusha was able to eventually become the Gym Leader of the Glaseado Gym.

Pokémon Horizons: The Series

Grusha first appeared in silhouette alongside the other Gym Leaders of Paldea in HZ046 during Clavell's explanation of how Terastal Training works. Grusha appeared properly in HZ056. He watched Liko and Katy battling against Rika and later exchanged brief words with Liko about her spirit during said battle. In the following episode, Grusha was assigned as Liko's second opponent as part of the Terastal Training course.

In HZ062, Grusha was seen watching Roy and Ryme's battle in the middle of the crowd. After the battle ended, he left silently. In the following episode, Grusha was with his Cetoddle when he met with Liko again after witnessing her bobsledding on another Cetoddle, Grusha was unamused about Liko having fun before her test and thought she wasn't taking it seriously. Grusha and Liko's battle commenced soon afterwards, and despite being caught by surprise at one point, Grusha proved to be too much for Liko to handle and managed to defeat her. Despite Liko doing her best, Grusha decided to fail her and said he wouldn't accept a rematch before taking his leave.

Character

Prior to his accident, Grusha was a very happy man, living his dream and passion as a professional snowboarder and was constantly showing a smile on his face. After his injury and forced retirement, Grusha became a very quiet, stoic, and harsh man who puts results above all else, including emotion and hard work. Considered the strongest Gym Leader in the Paldea League, Grusha is a perfectionist, not allowing mistakes in his assessments and battles. Grusha is considered the pride of Glaseado Mountain, both for his achievements as a snowboarder and as a Gym Leader.

Although he partially recovered from the accident, Grusha eventually retired from competition, focusing solely on his career as a Gym Leader. His reason for leaving the sport remains a mystery, although some locals believed it was because he could no longer achieve the same results as before. He also expresses disappointment whenever he believes someone isn't taking their goals seriously enough, expressing his unamusement when he assumed Liko wasn't taking her Terastal Training seriously for spending her time bobsledding on a Cetoddle instead of training. He also doesn't believe in do-overs, refusing to accept a potential rematch against Liko after beating her.

Cetoddle

Cetoddle is Grusha's first known Pokémon and his first partner Pokémon. While it was still wild, Cetoddle walked onto a course where Grusha was competing in a snowboarding race, causing him to suffer an accident. After recovering, Grusha consoled Cetoddle for mistakenly causing his injury and added it to his team. It can usually be seen outside its Poké Ball, following Grusha around. It cheered on its Trainer during Liko's Terastal Training test battle.

None of Cetoddle's moves are known.

Altaria

Altaria is Grusha's second known Pokémon and his ace in battle. It went up against Liko's Floragato after Cetitan was swapped out. It mostly had the advantage of flight until Floragato grabbed its legs with her vine and brought it crashing down with Acrobatics. Both Altaria and Floragato were soon Terastallized by their respective Trainers. A clash between Terastallization-boosted attacks followed, which eventually resulted in Floragato's defeat, causing Liko to lose the battle.

Altaria's known moves are Moonblast and Ice Beam.

Cetitan

Cetitan is Grusha's third known Pokémon. It was used during Liko's Terastal Training test battle against him, taking on her Floragato, who was swapped out for Hattrem. Hattrem put up a decent fight and dealt some damage to it, but Cetitian ultimately overpowered and defeated her. It then went up against Floragato once again, but this time, it was incapacitated when it choked on her Magical Leaf attack. Cetitan was then swapped out in favor of Altaria.

Cetitan's known moves are Icicle Spear, Ice Spinner, and Liquidation.
