|desc=Pikachu was the first Pokémon used by James in the final portion of the test. Given his numerous defeats at the hands of Ash's Pikachu, James felt confident in his victory, but his opponent ended up being a Graveler, who was unaffected by Pikachu's Electric moves and easily defeated it. Later, MTR tried to have Pikachu attack the instructor, only for the instructor to have it turn around and attack Meowth instead.

Pikachu was the first Pokémon used by James in his battle portion of the exam, sent to battle the instructor's Graveler. When he first sent it out, James was overjoyed, noting that he had been destroyed by Ash's Pikachu so many times that he knew all of Pikachu's attacks by heart. This was viewed to be a rather lame exclamation by his team members, Jessie and MTR. James ordered Pikachu to use Thunderbolt and was quite pleased when Pikachu responded to his command. However, Thunderbolt proved to be useless and Graveler responded with a Tackle, which sent Pikachu bouncing off of James's head and rendering it unable to battle. At this point, James expressed his confusion as to why the Thunderbolt had not worked. The instructor explained that Electric attacks do not work against a Ground type like Graveler. This prompted to James to send out Ivysaur and Charizard, which caused him to be expelled from the exam.

Later, Meowth ordered Pikachu to use Thunder on the instructor but the instructor told it to turn around and attack TRT instead. At this point, it was officially mentioned that these Pokémon belonged to the instructor because he was the one who trained them.

The first out of three Pokémon received, Ash sent out Weezing to battle the instructor's Flareon. He wasn't too pleased with his choice. Todd noted that his response held the same expression as Weezing and could not help but take a few pictures, which angered Ash even more. Flareon started with a Flamethrower, and as Weezing dodged the move, Ash came up with an idea, and told Weezing to use Smog. Flareon launched another Flamethrower at the Smog, but the attacks collided, resulting in an explosion that sent Flareon flying back. Flareon recovered from the blast and started to use Leer, which Ash countered by ordering Weezing to use Smokescreen. The tactic worked, as Flareon's Leer could not penetrate the smoke. Weezing then won the battle by using Tackle while Flareon was still trapped in the smoke. This was the only battle won by Ash in the battle portion of the exam.

Later, when TRT attacked, Ash used Weezing, Arbok, and Meowth to battle them. Weezing attacked James by blasting him with gas. Ash then told Weezing to use Explosion, which resulted in Team Rocket blasting off.

Ash sent Meowth to battle the instructor's Vaporeon, and by now, having received yet another Pokémon owned by Team Rocket seemed to amuse him.  He initially did not remember what sort of attacks Meowth could use, but after hearing someone in the crowd calling for a Fury Swipes attack (that someone being TRT's own MTR), he ordered Meowth to use Fury Swipes. The instructor

The Pokémon League entrance exam instructor is a character of the day who appeared in The Ultimate Test. He was never given any official name.

His job is to oversee the Pokémon League Admissions Exam. He also loans random sets of three Pokémon to the test-takers during the final portion of the test to compete in a battle against him.

He first appeared when Ash, Team Rocket, and Nurse Joy signed up for the Pokémon League Admissions Exam. After signing up, Ash gave him his Pokémon on the counter, save for Pikachu in which he gave to Misty, as he wasn't allowed to have his own Pokémon during the exam. As the exam began, the instructor proctored the students on the first and second part of it. When Jessie was getting disruptive during the second part of the exam as she thought that the questions were hard, the instructor expelled her.

During the third part of the entrance exam, he told Ash and James to pick a set of rental Pokémon for the match while Nurse Joy battled another instructor. After Nurse Joy won, the head instructor battled James. When James sent out two Pokémon at once, he was immediately disqualified. Ash battled him next and went up against his three Eeveelutions. When Team Rocket's Meowth freed the Meowth who was battling Vaporeon from ice, the instructor wanted to catch him, but before he did so, James returned with the instructor's Pokémon. He ordered them to attack the instructor, but the instructor ordered them to turn around, causing the Pokémon to attack Team Rocket instead.

After Team Rocket was defeated, the instructor had to restart the exam because of Team Rocket's interference. He offered Ash to retake it, but Ash declined as he chose to stick to battling in order to get into the Pokémon League.
