Apprentices are characters in Pokémon Emerald who are found in the Battle Frontier, on the left side of the Battle Tower's waiting room. An apprentice automatically looks up to the player for their skill and strategies, and wants the player to teach him/her. An apprentice will change a few things that happen in the Battle Tower:
- An apprentice will ask the player questions, concerning things such as which Pokémon to train and which moves to teach the Pokémon, or showing him battle strategies.
- Sometimes, the apprentice will want to see the strategies in a battle, so he/she will battle the player in the Battle Tower.
- On rare occasions, the apprentice will also battle with the player in a double battle against two other trainers in the Battle Tower's Double Battle mode.
In time, an apprentice will state that they feel they have learned everything they can from the player and depart the Battle Tower, presumably never to be seen again. Within a few days of game time, a different apprentice will take his/her place, repeating the cycle.
