The Starter Deck (Japanese: 第1弾スターターパック Series 1 Starter Pack) is an introductory deck from the Base Set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. It was released in Japan only and contains a random assortment of cards from the set. The deck was constructed in the following manner: -

  • 1 random holographic rare card
  • 1 random rare card
  • 8 random uncommon cards
  • 20 random common cards
  • 30 Basic Energy cards:
    • 5 Grass Energy
    • 5 Fire Energy
    • 5 Water Energy
    • 5 Lightning Energy
    • 5 Psychic Energy
    • 5 Fighting Energy

  • This deck is unusual as the cards for each rarity are completely random, unlike English decks which all contain the same pre-selected cards. This trend has been used in Japan with every first Expansion in a new Generation, with the exception of Generation III where the idea was used in Half Decks in the sixth Expansion.
  • This deck is similar to English releases such as the 2 Player Starter Set and 2 Player CD-Rom Starter Set, designed to introduce players to the cards found in the set.
  • Unlike the majority of cards found in decks in Japan, these cards have rarity symbols.
  • Like other Theme Decks, the Pocket Monsters Trading Card Game Deck also includes a rulebook, damage counters, a custom coin (Chansey) and card list.
