:From my experience, Block Upgrades count the number of days you've entered the area; that is, you have to go to the Safari Zone and find a Pokémon in that area each day until it upgrades. Also, the upgrades definitely count per block/area, although I'm fairly certain that all plains-blocks, water-blocks, etc. in an area are upgraded at the same time (So it doesn't really matter whether you use all stumps or both stumps and branches, for instance). I can see how the page is confusing in that respect, as it took me a while to figure out all the details as well. So if the Desert has been one of the six accessible for the past 30 days then the blocks you are placing will each be worth two. 28*2=56, more than the 49 required. :You need to upgrade the Marshland Area at least once, so that plains blocks count for double the standard value (i.e., 18 plains blocks give you a plains block value of 36, which is just over enough to attract seviper). The way in which area upgrades work, however, is a bit weird. It's not as simple as just placing the necessary blocks in the area and waiting 10 days. You can place ''any'' block(s) in the area, and you then have to actively start up the game (and save) on 10 separate (but not necessarily consecutive) days. After this, the area will be upgraded permanently, forever doubling the value of any future plains blocks placed in it. He ''will'' call you if you meet the upgrade criteria, but it's pretty easy to miss his call (e.g., if you change location just as he calls you, if you're in an area that doesn't have any signal or if your gaming session doesn't last long enough for any NPC to randomly call you). Hello, after much work extracting data from the games I've been able to determine the encounter rate for every block, the current data (which I don't know the source of) is only correct in the walking encounters but the surfing and rod encounters are missing time of day distinctions, worst of all, there's a complete separate table for every method in every zone after the national pokedex, and it has many exclusive pokemon that are not currently being displayed, if someone could help me correct all this data I'd be grateful. {{unsigned|SimplyBLG}} | |||

Time of Day Row?
The tables need a compatible time of day row, because there are changes in encounters for the non-block Pokémon. I tried using the catchheader, catchbar and catchtime templates, but they're all one column too short. --Maxo 18:28, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

- Hmm, Maybe Time does have an affect on block-only pokemon as well. I wasn't sure to be honest. At any rate I went through and updated the templates to include time, and I cleaned up the page so that it at least displays unknowns in the fields I didn't know about. Should we add the location column to see what it usually best found in?
- I agree since there are so many different sections a Pokémon can be found in and since Serebii presently confirms post-National Pokédex Pokémon I think a list would be a good idea. I have all the information for the safari zone (Kanto guide) and want to add it, but the template right now doesn't allow adding blocks. Block Upgrade Notification?
I got a call from Baoba today, and he said something about the catchable Pokémon changing in one of the areas. Now, I believe it was a block upgrade he was notifying me about, but that seems to clash with the info in the article, especially since he mentioned that somehow you could get the original Pokémon back... Anyway, has this happened to anyone else? I thought that if I'm correct, perhaps this should be added to the article. -•Palkiajosh•

Inaccurate Maximum Block Upgrades?
There's a guide on GameFAQs (found here) that states:
"After a certain amount of time, Blocks will level up if left in an area. This will allow one Block to count for up to 7."
This would contradict what the article currently says (that the maximum possible value for any given block is 4). Now, normally I would question the guide instead of the wiki, but the guide matches our current data perfectly, as well as lists several statistics which we currently have labeled as "Unknown". The question is, which is correct-- are there only 3 possible upgrades, or is there 6? - As far as I can tell, the article here never mentions that the numbers written on here are the maximum at all. The website you provided is correct, however putting information in this article gotten from them would be stealing from them, which is why I didn't do it a long time ago. The numbers listed on here are the upgrades necessary to get all Pokemon out through blocks. Any day count past that I couldn't prove myself, so therefore is not included yet (until someone who can, adds it) (Yaminokame 01:19, 25 April 2010 (UTC))

- Trust me, the fact that the timeframes for the parts of day were changed between Generation II and Generation IV threw me off as well. Questions regarding Block Upgrades
I'm having trouble understanding some things about the description of Block Upgrades. Can anybody clarify the following points?
- What does "days used" mean exactly? Does the block just need to be placed in the area, and in case I take a month-long break from playing, the 30 days will still count for the upgrades? Or does is count on how many different days I entered the area?
- Do the upgrades count per block, or per block/area? If a block has been upgraded in the Peak area, and then gets moved to the Desert area, will it be back to level 1 there, or keep its level?

- From my experience, Block Upgrades count the number of days you've entered the area; that is, you have to go to the Safari Zone and find a Pokémon in that area each day until it upgrades. Also, the upgrades definitely count per block/area, although I'm fairly certain that all plains-blocks, water-blocks, etc. in an area are upgraded at the same time (So it doesn't really matter whether you use all stumps or both stumps and branches, for instance). I can see how the page is confusing in that respect, as it took me a while to figure out all the details as well. Perhaps the wording could be changed? --AndyPKMN 13:28, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
- I was able to catch a Riolu today. But the thing is that I didn't go to the Safari Zone very often. So that means Blocks will be upgraded over time instead of by the number of days you visit the Safari Zone. --Arima 23:55, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
- I also suspect this is calculated by the days on which you've resumed/played/saved your game (as opposed to actual Safari Zone visits, or the clock in general). I am currently trying to attract Riolu to my Safari Zone as well, and while I have yet to hear Warden Baoba calling me to tell me about Meadow upgrades (though he's called once or twice to inform me of Mountain or Forest upgrades), I nonetheless can verify double effectiveness of my Meadow blocks at this time. On a related note, I wonder how is it decided when Baoba calls? Does he call every ten days (per area), or only when the upgrade actually attracts a new Pokemon? There might be a possibility for the latter: His dialogue claims the area's pokemon have "changed", and he'd have no reason to call if you haven't placed at least one attracting block in the area to effect a change with. ----Stratelier 03:22, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
Question about the DS clock

- I don't think so, as I think the games have a sort of system that disallows it, like the Pal Park system or the swarm system. Which is right?
- To catch a Riolu, Marter's Safari Zone Guide at GAMEFAQS says to plant 10 Forest and 14 Rocky Blocks then wait 70 Days.
- To catch a Riolu, this article says to plant 28 Forest and 42 Rocky Blocks.

- After 70 days the forest and peak blocks are both worth triple, so they can actually both be right. 10*3=30, which is the minimum needed for 28 blocks, and 14*3=42. The difference is that this article has the requirements, while that guide has the instructions. Since only 30 blocks can be placed, it's impossible to actually place 42 blocks. Once you've waited 70 days, the peak blocks become worth three, so it is actually possible to reach the total required. (the forest blocks are worth three after 60 days). - According to people on GameFAQs, the number of days it takes to double the blocks is based on the number of days the area has been active in the Safari Zone, not the number of days since the blocks were placed, even if you don't go to the Safari Zone. So if the Desert has been one of the six accessible for the past 30 days then the blocks you are placing will each be worth two. 28*2=56, more than the 49 required. In my experience though, it should be that Boaba may call to tell you of the upgrades. I'm pretty sure I never got a call from him about that, and I've tested, and I definitely have several upgrades. New Catch Template Design
While things are going smoothly with upgrading the design for the catch templates, but the question is that it would be more complicated to do here, namely with the (Block 1) and (Block 2) designs on the old template. Metang without the waiting
Today I used the Safari Zone for the first time (excluding Baoba's 2 challenges). I placed 15 Small Rocks in the Mountain Area to find a Lunatone. I also managed to encounter 8 Metangs (Didn't manage to catch any though). How is this possible? I have never placed an object in the Safari Zone before today, although it would be at least 100 days since I received the objects in the first place (I took a prolonged break). - Yeah, good luck catching one. Metang have the lowest possible catch rate, tied with legendaries such as Ho-oh and Lugia. It was a cruel trick of Game Freak's to stick them in the Safari Zone. >_< --AndyPKMN 12:43, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

Block upgrade times
Since there's ten days between each block upgrade, does anyone have any idea why it takes 80 for the Waterside ones to go up, but it takes twenty more (up to 100) for the Forests to upgrade again? Is this an error or is there actually that ten day gap? Salix 08:15, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

Bait/Mud Mechanics?

- I believe this was discussed under Talk:Catch rate -- roughly speaking, I think it's Bait multiplies the catch rate by 1/2 (1/3, 1/4, etc.), while Mud multiples it by 2x (3x, 4x, etc.) Similar logic probably applies to the flee rate, though I'm not finding any mention of what a species's base "flee" rate is. Bait and Mud when the Ball Breaks
This is something that's been bugging me for a very long time. Do the bait/mud stages reset when a Pokémon escapes from the ball? I've been hunting Seaking, and after two muds and a broken Safari Ball, they break out of any other balls I throw, while throwing more mud makes them run (usually after the first mud). Trapinch 2

Seviper
How do you get Seviper to appear in the Safari Zone? Serebii says that it will appear by placing 18 Plains blocks in the Marshland and waiting 10 days but when I went to check, I never encountered one. Am I missing something? Poke'fan07 (talk) 18:22, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- You need to upgrade the Marshland Area at least once, so that plains blocks count for double the standard value (i.e., 18 plains blocks give you a plains block value of 36, which is just over enough to attract seviper). The way in which area upgrades work, however, is a bit weird. It's not as simple as just placing the necessary blocks in the area and waiting 10 days. You can place any block(s) in the area, and you then have to actively start up the game (and save) on 10 separate (but not necessarily consecutive) days. After this, the area will be upgraded permanently, forever doubling the value of any future plains blocks placed in it. You can do the same thing again to gain further upgrades, which increase the value of other block types. Pale Prism (talk) 22:27, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

- I can't quite remember, but I don't think that you have to wait to be called by Baoba for the upgrade to take effect. He will call you if you meet the upgrade criteria, but it's pretty easy to miss his call (e.g., if you change location just as he calls you, if you're in an area that doesn't have any signal or if your gaming session doesn't last long enough for any NPC to randomly call you). Sadly, I don't think that there's any in-game indication as to which Safari Zone areas have already been upgraded, so you might just have to make sure that you've fulfilled all of the criteria yourself and then just try a bunch of wild battles to see if seviper appears. Reformatting the encounter tables
I'm in the middle of organizing the encounter tables into a comprehensible format, and figured I'd edit the page with my results once I'm finished. However, the tables seem to be a bit disorganized. I have no idea how to make/edit tables on here, so would someone be willing to format them into the same style other pages have? These would be sorted by walking, surfing, and fishing. The only difference would be, instead of a Games column, we could have the two block columns. Wrong and missing encounters for every zone
Hello, after much work extracting data from the games I've been able to determine the encounter rate for every block, the current data (which I don't know the source of) is only correct in the walking encounters but the surfing and rod encounters are missing time of day distinctions, worst of all, there's a complete separate table for every method in every zone after the national pokedex, and it has many exclusive pokemon that are not currently being displayed, if someone could help me correct all this data I'd be grateful. - unsigned comment from SimplyBLG (talk • contribs)
Area Upgrades
So, the article says: 'The day counter for each active area of the safari zone is not related to the internal game clock. In order to achieve area upgrades, the player must actually play the game on different days to increment the counters.'
But I've been playing Soulsilver recently (after doing a replay early last year and then putting it down for several months), and I've noticed that not only did the active Safari Zone areas immediately upgrade on the same day I booted the game up again, but they are now at the max level with each block being worth 7 points. I tested by placing blocks in every active area to encounter spawns that would verify, so I'm certain they're maxed out.
This would seem to suggest that the game *is* looking at the internal clock, because I am 100% certain I did not play the game on 250 separate days after unlocking block-placing. Has anyone else noticed this, or could someone equipped to verify my testing do so? One full year later but I've tested it. Indeed it IS tied to the clock.
Test 1, save file on day 9, played on my DS lite. Day rolls over to 10 while I play, making sure not to save. I receive the upgrades call from Baoba at 00:17. Successfully find a Spinda.
Test 2, I just reset without saving on day 10and without changing the clock. Go straight to the Safari Zone. It still is day 10 on my DS. Don't receive Boaba call but Spinda does Spawn.
Test 3, try on my 3DS with same date and time as my DS. Spinda doesn't spawn.
Test 4, change my 3DS clock to day 9 and let it roll over to day 10 ingame. Check at 00:02 and Spinda still doesn't spawn.
Test 5, change my DS clock to day 9 23:59. Let clock move forward to 00:02 ingame. Spinda doesn't spawn anymore.
Definitely, the Safari Zone is tied to the DS clock just like the Pal Prk.
