The Heart Gauge is split into five equal bars. When a Shadow Pokémon is first [[snag]]ged, all five bars are full. In the same way that two Pokémon with a "full" HP bar may actually have different amounts of HP, so too may two different Shadow Pokémon with full Heart Gauges have a different absolute number underlying their Heart Gauges. The size of a given Shadow Pokémon's full Heart Gauge can be seen on the [[list of Shadow Pokémon]]. All other things equal, this means that a Shadow Pokémon with a bigger full Heart Gauge number will take longer to fully open its heart than a Shadow Pokémon with a smaller number will.

The event that occurred and the Shadow Pokémon's Nature combine to affect the amount by which a Pokémon's Heart Gauge decreases, as described in the sections below. These amounts also differ between Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD. On average, the effects in XD are weaker than those in Colosseum; on the other hand, the average size of a full Heart Gauge for a Shadow Pokémon is also smaller in XD than in Colosseum.

In Pokémon XD, events typically open a Pokémon's Heart Gauge less than they do in Pokémon Colosseum, but the average size of a full Heart Gauge is also smaller in Pokémon XD.

In the case of Scents, the Scent used further affects the amount by which the Heart Gauge decreases. The Joy Scent multiplies the appropriate value below by 1, the Excite Scent multiplies it by 2, and the Vivid Scent multiplies it by 3.
Each individual Shadow Pokémon maintains its own step counter for the walking events. Consequently, a Shadow Pokémon may open its heart at a different time than when party Pokémon gain friendship, and two Shadow Pokémon may open their hearts at different times.

In short, the actions with the potential for the strongest effects are: calling a Pokémon out of Hyper Mode or Reverse Mode, walking while a Pokémon is in the Day Care, and using a Vivid Scent. The absolute lowest effect of these is stronger than the absolute lowest effect of other actions, and their absolute strongest effect is stronger than that of any other action.
The values listed below for how much Scents open a Pokémon's Heart Gauge are for the [[Joy Scent]]: the [[Excite Scent]] opens a Pokémon's Heart Gauge twice as much, and the [[Vivid Scent]] three times as much.

Seedot's Heart Gauge is full

A Heart Gauge (Japanese: リライブゲージ Relive Gauge) is a meter for a Shadow Pokémon in Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness that measures how far it is from being able to be purified.

Reason: Can (somewhat purified) Shadow Pokemon gain EVs in XD? Can a Shadow Pokemon actually gain friendship in XD?

The Heart Gauge is split into five equal bars. When a Shadow Pokémon is first snagged, all five bars are full. These bars represent the proportion of the Pokémon's total Heart Gauge that has been opened, but the actual value of a Pokémon's full Heart Gauge depends on the Pokémon's species (in the same way that two Pokémon with a "full" HP bar may have different amounts of HP). All other things equal, this means that a Shadow Pokémon with a bigger full Heart Gauge number will take longer to fully open its heart than a Shadow Pokémon with a smaller number will.

For a full list of each Pokémon's Heart Gauge size, see List of Shadow Pokémon.

While its Heart Gauge is full, a Shadow Pokémon's Nature is hidden (displaying as "????"), it can only use Shadow moves (Shadow Rush only in Colosseum, two to four Shadow moves in XD), and cannot gain experience or friendship. Each time the player fully opens one of the Pokémon's Heart Gauge bars, some of these restrictions are removed.

On the summary screen, the Heart Gauge replaces the experience bar, and the above descriptions replace the displayed numbers for total experience and experience to next level.

Moves that are currently locked display as ???-type, with a name of "????", current and maximum PP of "??", base power and accuracy of "---", and (in Colosseum) a Contest condition of "???" with Appeal and Jam scores of 0 hearts. The move description (and Contest description) are both replaced with "This can't be used because the heart's door is shut."

Reason: Appropriate details for the Purification Chamber

There are several ways in which to open a Pokémon's heart.

  • Sending the Pokémon into battle
  • Calling the Pokémon out of Hyper ModeColo or Reverse ModeXD in battle
  • Walking, every 256 steps, while the Pokémon is in the player's party
  • Walking, every 256 steps, while the Pokémon is in the Day Care
    • This only works in Pokémon Colosseum. In Pokémon XD, Shadow Pokémon cannot be dropped off at the Day Care.
  • Using Scents
  • Placing the Pokémon in the Purify Chamber (Pokémon XD only)

The amount that a Pokémon's Heart Gauge opens depends on both the event that occurred and the Shadow Pokémon's Nature; these amounts also differ between Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD. In Pokémon XD, events typically open a Pokémon's Heart Gauge less than they do in Pokémon Colosseum, but the average size of a full Heart Gauge is also smaller in Pokémon XD.

Each individual Shadow Pokémon maintains its own step counter for the walking events. Consequently, a Shadow Pokémon may open its heart at a different time than when party Pokémon gain friendship, and two Shadow Pokémon may open their hearts at different times.

The values listed below for how much Scents open a Pokémon's Heart Gauge are for the Joy Scent: the Excite Scent opens a Pokémon's Heart Gauge twice as much, and the Vivid Scent three times as much.

Lugia

In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, Shadow Lugia's Heart Gauge is fully closed until it is placed in the Purification Chamber with all nine chambers at max tempo. When this is done, the Heart Gauge will automatically open and Lugia can be purified. However, if Lugia is taken out before being purified, its Heart Gauge will again close completely.

Trivia

  • The actions with the potential for the strongest effects are calling a Pokémon out of Hyper Mode or Reverse Mode, walking while the Pokémon is in the Day Care, and using a Vivid Scent. The absolute lowest effect of these is stronger than the absolute lowest effect of other actions, and their absolute strongest effect is stronger than that of any other action.
