::I get the idea, but wouldn't that result in a stub? It's probably better to just keep it under "Nickname" until there's enough content to warrant separating it, since it is still ''a nickname'', right? Simplification
Shouldn't this article be simplified? It says "If the Pokémon is traded or transferred to another game, its nickname cannot be changed unless it is traded back to its Original Trainer.", which could be shortened to something like "A Pokémon's nickname can only be changed by its OT." Additionally, shouldn't the name rater's location and purpose be discussed here? --ZellMurasame 22:49, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
- no, i think it should stay how it is. you know somone is going to wonder about trading. i know i always did, untill i did it one day and realized how it works that way. MAGNEDETHTALK 23:35, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
- Yes but when you get a Pokemon in a trade, you're not the OT so it should be obvious that you can't change the name. Once you get your Pokemon back, you're still the OT regardless of who owned it inbetween the catching and present. I'm not sure how this is unclear. --ZellMurasame 00:04, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- I wonder if when a ten-digit nickname in an american Generation IV game is traded to a Japanese one, it stays ten-digit? TorchicBlaziken 17:20, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, they do. PKMNChamp 12:23, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
ALMOST!???
It says that nicknamed Pokemon are almost never encountered in battles. They're never encountered in battles, period. TorchicBlaziken (talk•edits) 16:15, 25 December 2008 (UTC)
- They are in Stadium. --Phred 17:06, 26 December 2008 (UTC)
R/S/E Nickname Show
Is the TV show in R/S/E really aired after every Pokémon is nicknamed? In my experience, the show only airs if you change a Pokémon's name with the Name Rater. T a r o m o n 17:55, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, that is correct. I've fixed the page. —darklordtrom 21:47, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
Nicknames in Battle Videos
Based on the small blurb about Tits the Staraptor, I did a test. It seems like the nicknames in Battle Videos are only reverted if you upload them to the GTS.
To test this, I gave three Pokes vulgar nicknames (e.g. tits, bitch) and recorded a Battle Tower battle. When I viewed the Battle Video, the nicknames stayed the same. However, when I uploaded the video to the GTS and watched it on the server, the nicknames were reverted. I'm not surprised, since it's similar to PBR's nickname reverting in Random Battles.
Anyone got any more info, or can I clarify this in the article? MagicBarrier 03:25, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Available characters
On the Japanese wiki they list which characters may be used in nicknames in the different generations. I thought maybe it would be interesting to do a comparison too, and possibly compare the character sets to that of other language versions. (like ü, ö, ß, etc in German and é, ç, à, etc in French version)
In 2nd generation (checked on Pokémon Gold):
- upper: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ -?!/.,(A-Z, space, hyphen, question mark, exclamation mark, backslash, full stop, comma)
- lower: abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz ×():;[]PKMN (a-z, space, multiplication sign, round bracket open, round bracket close, colon, semicolon, square bracket open, square bracket close, poké sign, mon sign)
In 3rd generation (checked on Pokémon Ruby)
- upper: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ ., (A-Z, space, full stop, comma)
- lower: abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz ., (a-z, space, full stop, comma)
- others: 0123456789 !?♂♀/-..“”‘’ (0-9, space, exclamation mark, question mark, male sign, female sign, backslash, hyphen, double full stop, double quotation mark open, double quotation mark close, single quotation mark open, single quotation mark close.)
I can't find my 1st generation game right now. These where checked on European English versions as sold in the Netherlands, to be exact. --Spenvdm 11:19, 30 August 2010 (UTC)
Giratina in Platinum
Should it be noted that in Platinum if you catch Giratina in the Distortion World and nickname it, Cynthia will mention it by its nickname rather than species when you return? - unsigned comment from KinCryos (talk • contribs)
GTS limits
If you try and put an unnicknamed Weedle on the GTS in Gen V it doesn't let you (I've tested this and it's true). I've heard this is because the name recognises "Weed" as an offensive word, however the Gen V GTS let me put a Turtwig named "SHIT" (transferred from Gen IV) up with no problems. Even though "SHIT" is a black listed nickname in BW (I've tested this too). Is it that Weedle can't be put up due to the name "Weed" being offensive, or is there some other reason? If it is because of "Weed", why was I allowed to put "SHIT" up? (It was for scientific purposes only and I took the Turtwig back from the GTS, so no 10 year old is gonna end up with it and get banned from pokémon by their parents) Jmvb 13:30, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
- Perhaps there is another abnormality on that Weedle? Try breeding it and offering its baby. The nickname filter doesn't stop you from entering "weed" as a nickname. The GTS filter which caused similar problems for Cofagrigus was removed, so this shouldn't be an issue. --SnorlaxMonster 12:45, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
- You say that but the Froslass problem wasn't fixed. - unsigned comment from Lugia61617 (talk • contribs)
Normal Names
Can I just point out something which I think is worth the article noting? Due to the censoring nature, sometimes normal names can be blocked due to all or part of their name. (is it me or did Game Freak go OTT with this?) - unsigned comment from Lugia61617 (talk • contribs)
Nosepass/Probopass issue
I think it's worth noting that Nosepass and Probopass can't be loaded into the GTS for Black and White due the nickname sensor picking them up as offensive. --KingStarscream 20:04, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
- This is already noted on their respective pages. This page is simply to inform why some names may not pass through and just nicknaming Pokémon in general. :) Frozen Fennec 20:38, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
List of Nicknamed Pokemon
Shouldn't there be a list of nicknamed Pokemon? Canon ones, of course, not just anyone's Pokemon. It can be in a dropdown list like on the move pages (like where it says which Pokemon have used what moves). We should have a list of all nicknamed Pokemon for the games, anime, manga, and TCG (if any). How about it? Jdrawer (talk) 22:41, 21 November 2012 (UTC)
- If there's no opposition, I'm going to start it. Jdrawer (talk) 17:21, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
- Since the list will be so in-depth, why don't you start it in your userspace first? User:Jdrawer/Nickname or a similar title would be good. I'd recommend making it sortable, and including both trainer, what canon it's from, and the Pokémon nicknamed. --Abcboy (talk) 17:28, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
Picture...
The picture still looks like a Bidoof being named "Buck", not a Patrat being named "Lookout"... Can anyone fix this? ShinyMew9001 (talk) 22:14, 22 July 2013 (UTC)
- Yes. The person who can fix this is called Time. Try hitting Ctrl F5. If that doesn't work, wait. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 22:29, 22 July 2013 (UTC)
About gen VI
Shouldn't there be a section or even a mention of the Nickname system in Pokemon X or Y? Like how the nickname limit's been changed or something? ★☆Togetic45☆★ 10:59, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
- I think there should be. AwesomeGrovyle (talk) 03:10, 27 December 2013 (UTC)
- How about the fact that the player themself gains a nickname in X & Y? I assume there should at least be a mention of this. -Shockthetoast (talk) 06:29, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
Split
In theory, this article should be about the names assigned to Pokémon only. However, recently, information about naming the player and similar concepts has been added. While understandable, since nickname and player name text entry is almost the same, I think the best solution would be to split that content to its own page and have this page once again be exclusively about names assigned to Pokémon. --SnorlaxMonster 02:53, 2 February 2017 (UTC)

Creative abuse of nicknames in connection with Pokemon GO's appraisal function
Should I mention the tendency of Pokemon GO user to give their Pokémon weird or obscene nicknames and through that, let the team leaders say obscene or weid things? It was a quite the meme when the appraisal system way released.--Arisboch (talk) 03:43, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
Rotom Pokédex
Can someone find the rotom Pokédex’s nicknames for the player and add them in to the “for the player section”. I’ll add a template for now. UltraSolgaleo (talk) 19:40, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
- I'm working on it right now - I've got the English ones, two of the Japanese ones, and I know French and can figure out any of the languages that use Latin characters, so I'm probably just gonna play through it in everything I can read. Gonna need help to figure out Simplified and Traditional Chinese, and probably Korean as well. The Japanese wikis don't seem to archive this stuff, but I'm holding out hope for the other international ones for now. Chordsofsteel (talk) 18:14, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
I named myself “C*NT” in Emerald to see if OT names are blacklisted
Apparently not, it was allowed.
What happens when a Pokémon with a swear word as the Trainer OT is transferred into a newer game?
Pikmin3WiiU (talk) 00:33, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
- It will be censored if you transfer it through Poké Transporter. --Abcboy (talk) 00:57, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
Rotom Pokédex Nicknames
Since the USUM Rotom Dex nicknames are absent under "Nicknames for the player", I'm trying to collect all of them. While I'm realistically just gonna play through the game again for a few of the languages, I've only managed to get ポン (-pon) and ますが (masuta) of the Japanese nicknames, and haven't a clue how they're formatted with the player's name. As a fun bonus, I also don't know how to read either Chinese writing system...
Basically, if anyone happens to have the time, energy, or just has this stuff lying around, lemme know! Chordsofsteel (talk) 18:09, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
