The Pokémon franchise first reached France when the anime was dubbed into French in 1997 and began to air across the country.
Pokémon Video Games
Pokémon Red and Blue was released on October 9, 1999, along with the rest of Europe. The versions that went to France were translated into French. Also, Pokémon Gold and Silver, Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, and Pokémon Diamond and Pearl were translated into French as well.
The names of the Gym Leaders were changed drastically, possibly due to translations of the games. In Pokémon Red and Blue, some examples would be that Blaine would be changed into Auguste, and Brock would be changed into Pierre. This also occours in the other Pokémon games.
