The Rare Candy Cheat is probably one of the most infamous glitches in the Generation I Pokémon games. It gives the trainer unlimited Rare Candies (or whatever item is in the sixth slot of the bag).

It is a side effect of the Missingno. bug, where the sixth item in a player's bag, not necessarily a Rare Candy, gets 127 copies of itself added. By using all of these but one and repeating the bug, the player can have an infinite amount of that item.

As the trainer will often encounter Pokémon over level 100 that are hard to escape from while executing the Missingno. glitch, it is a good idea to clone Poké Dolls.

Starting the Cheat

Requirements

  • A Pokémon in your party that is taught Fly.
  • A Pokémon in your party that is taught Surf.
  • It is recommended to have your party about Lv. 50 or higher.
  • At least one Rare Candy in your bag.

Instructions

To begin the Rare Candy Cheat, talk to the Old Man located North of Viridian City. Let him know that you are not in a hurry so that he will demonstrate on how to catch a Pokémon. Once he is finished, Fly to Cinnabar Island. Place your Rare Candy as the sixth slot in your bag if it already isn't (to do this, move your arrow on the sixth item in your bag. Press the SELECT button then move your arrow to wherever the Rare Candy is in your bag. Press the SELECT button once more and the items should switch places).

Start Surfing up and down along the east coast of the island where the water is touching the land. Whether Missingno. will appear or not depends on the player's name and other Pokémon may appear. Continue Surfing along the coast until Missingno. appears. Defeat or run from Missingno. as long as you are no longer in battle with it. After that, return to land.

Press START to open the menu and view your items. If done correctly, there should be a pixel on the right of the Rare Candy where is usually indicates the amount. This cannot only be done with Rare Candies, however, but other hard-to-obtain items. Most favorable items to copy are Master Balls, Nuggets, and expensive items such as Full Restore and Revive.

(Important Note: This cheat is only successful in the Pokémon Red and Blue Versions, not Yellow version.)
