The Violet Gym (Japanese: キキョウジム Kikyō Gym) is the official gym of Violet City. It is based on Template:Type2 Pokémon. The Gym Leader is Falkner. Trainers who defeat him receive the Zephyr Badge.

In the games

Generation II

In Generation II, the Gym structure was very basic. It was very similar to Pewter Gym by layout, a pathway leading directly to the Gym Leader with two Trainers obscuring the way. The path is held on some sort of raised platform, with a seemingly bottomless pit left and right of the path. The path creates an "S" shape as it winds around toward the Gym Leader. At the tips of the "S" there are two Trainers that are both unavoidable. At the end stands Falkner, who will battle any challengers of the gym. After Falkner is defeated, he will give the player the Zephyr Badge, TM31 (Mud-Slap), and the ability to use Flash outside of battle.

Generation IV

Violet City Pokémon Gym
Leader: Falkner
"The Elegant Master of Flying Pokémon"

The Gym appears to be redesigned as to another perceptive. Trainers will start on plain ground other than a raised floor, along with a wooden platform that will lift Trainers up to the upper level, where a structure similar to the previous generation awaits. The path creates an "S" shape as it winds around toward the Gym Leader. A Trainer waits at each end of the "S", but unlike in Generation II, both Trainers can be avoided by walking on the glass tiles that encircle the field. Falkner waits at the back of the Gym. After Falkner is defeated, he will give the player the Zephyr Badge, TM51 (Roost), and the ability to use Rock Smash outside of battle.

In the anime

The Violet Gym made its only anime appearance in Fighting Flyer with Fire. The battlefield is on the top of a tall building and is without a roof so that Flying Pokémon can make full use of their abilities.

After saving Pikachu from Team Rocket, Ash challenged Falkner to a battle. The battle got off to a bad start for the young Trainer, but it became better when Ash defeated Falkner's Hoothoot and Dodrio. However, the Gym Leader's Pidgeot proved to be too tough for Pikachu. Using Charizard, Ash was able to defeat Pidgeot and earn his first Johto League badge, the Zephyr Badge.

Trivia

  • Falkner is the Gym Leader with the lowest level Pokémon in the games, with a Pidgey at level 7 and a Pidgeotto at level 9 in Generation II. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, this is remedied somewhat, with Pidgey rising to level 9 and Pidgeotto rising to level 13, however, he is still the lowest leveled of all Gym Leaders, with Roark, Brock and the Sanyou Leaders having Pokémon at levels 12 and 14 when they are first challenged, and Roxanne having Pokémon at levels 12, 14, and 15.
    • However, it should be noted that Falkner is the only first Gym Leader of any region to use an evolved Pokémon.
  • This Gym used to be the only Gym that is encountered first in a region not to specialize in Template:Type2s.
  • According to Falkner, the Gym is cleaned once a year with help of the bird Pokémon.
  • Coincidentally, all trainers in the Violet Gym (Barring Falkner) share their name with a character in the popular animated show The Simpsons.
