Team Flare (Japanese: フレア団 Flare-dan, literally Flare Gang) is a villainous team in the Kalos region.
In the games
In Pokémon X and Y
Team Flare appears in X and Y. Their goal is to create a "beautiful and better" world while making money, eliminating everyone who doesn't follow their standards. Like the previous Pokémon games, Pokémon X & Pokémon Y feature another antagonist team who try to thwart you in every way as you travel through the region of Kalos.
They are first encountered in Glittering Cave, where they attempt to steal the fossils of the researcher working there but are stopped by the player and Serena/Calem. This all occurs without the researcher even noticing.
They next appear in a scene in Route 10, examining the mysterious rock formation. The player is spotted by one Grunt who wants revenge for their plans being ruined in Glittering Cave. Once defeated, they are next spotted in Geosenge Town, where they are examining the rock formations there. One Grunt is seen running away, but once he is followed, all that is there is a rock which is later revealed to be the Team Flare Secret HQ.
In Route 13, a group of Grunts led by a Team Flare Admin and a Team Flare scientist Aliana attempted to siphon electricity from the Kalos Power Plant and blocking the entrance to Lumiose City as well as causing a blackout across the city, preventing the player from accessing the fifth gym. They are defeated once more here by the player after retrieving the key card a grunt had dropped outside.
At Laverre City, Grunts block the player from entering Route 15 and the Poké Ball Factory until the player has the Fairy Badge, at which point Shauna tricks the Grunt guarding the Poké Ball Factory away from his post so the player can enter. Though the player defeats them, the Team Flare scientists are able to steal the many Poké Balls they wanted.
Team Flare is next seen antagonizing an Abomasnow in Frost Cavern, which upsets a wild Mamoswine that the player requires in order to get across the snow-blocked roads of Route 17. The player once again defeats the evil team here, gaining an Abomasite from the Abomasnow as thanks.
From that point, Team Flare does not make another appearance until the player has received their seventh badge from the Anistar City gym, where Team Flare's leader, Lysandre, sends out a live broadcast to all trainers via the Holo Caster. In this broadcast, Lysandre reveals Team Flare's plans of using the "ultimate weapon", a machine that was built by the king of Kalos 3,000 years ago that can wipe away all life.
To achieve this, Lysandre plans to use XerneasX/YveltalY to activate the machine in Lysandre Labs in Lumiose City. After the player arrives, Xerosic activates the weapon and the player watches it emerging from the ground of Geosenge Town, knocking over many houses.
The player eventually manages to find the Team Flare headquarters in Geosenge Town, hidden in a rock, and breaks into it. Once the player manages to break in, he or she will fight members of Team Flare until finally, with the help of his or her friends, he or she manages to find the legendary Pokémon. After fighting the legendary Pokémon and being chosen by it, Lysandre is fought and defeated for the last time. Lysandre uses what remains of the legendary Pokemon's power in the machine to destroy the machine, crushing himself in the process. Following this, Team Flare is disbanded.
Despite the collapse of the team, however, that is not the last that the player hears of them. In a post-game side story, Looker arrives in Lumiose City with the intent of apprehending a criminal he is tracking, enlisting the player and a young homeless woman named Emma to aid him. A crime wave breaks out in the city, and the culprit is ultimately revealed to be one of Team Flare's scientists, Xerosic, conducting an experiment using what little funds he still has following the disbanding of Team Flare. After the player defeats "Essentia," the creation of his project, Xerosic relents and surrenders to Looker, ending Team Flare's reign of terror once and for all.
Elite Four member Malva is also a member of Team Flare; however, she is not revealed to be with them until after Lysandre is defeated. Instead, she is the host of the newscasts occasionally sent through the Holo Caster. Her rank in Team Flare is unknown, although she knows classified information.
