In the anime
The meteorite appeared in Fight for the Meteorite!. Professor Cozmo searched for it on Mt. Chimney and succeeded in finding it with the help of a scanner. Team Magma arrived and attempted to steal the meteorite but Team Aqua's arrival gave Professor Cozmo and Ash a chance to get away with the meteorite. Professor Cozmo explained to Ash that it was part of a large asteroid that fell from space. A Golbat belonging to a member from Team Magma took the meteorite from Professor Cozmo in order to power up their machine. It got destroyed when Professor Cozmo pushed the machine down the volcano as there was no time to get the meteorite out of there.
In the manga
In the Ash and Pikachu manga
The meteorite appeared in Two Groups Attacking! Magma VS. Aqua.
In the Pokémon Adventures manga
The Meteorite first appeared in Bubble Bubble Toil and Azumarill II where it was excavated by Professor Cozmo. In the next chapter, Professor Cozmo placed the meteorite in a machine so that Team Aqua can extract energy from it and power the machine up to activate it.
