Name origin
Cleffa's name is a contraction of the name Clefairy, to indicate it is a pre-evolution. Clef is French for (musical) key. Its Japanese name is also a contraction of the name Pippi. The French name is a contraction of the word melody.
It is possible that its based on fairies and pixies, just like its evolutions.
