A Cool Trainer, Ace Trainer, or Cooltrainer, (Japanese: エリートトレーナー Elite Trainer) is a type of Pokémon Trainer that first debuted in the Generation I games. They are depicted as teens or young adults, and can be male or female. They frequently travel around the world to meet new Trainers and take part in Pokémon League competitions. In Generation I, the Cool Trainers are shown carrying whips. In Generations II and onward, they don't use the whip.
They generally use strong and evolved Pokémon, and their artificial intelligence is generally very good compared to other Trainer types in their games.
A pair of Cool Trainers paired together for a double battle is a Cool Couple. This class only appeared in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen; therefore, any other double battles with Cool Trainers would not display them as such.
In Generation IV, Cool Trainers have two sets of sprites, with one set of Cool Trainers dressed warmly for the blizzards near Snowpoint City. In the English versions of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, they were renamed as Ace Trainers for unknown reasons. However, in the original Japanese versions, they are still known as Elite Trainers. In Generation IV a pair of Ace Trainers is a Double Team.
