Ash's Quilava (Japanese: サトシのマグマラシ Satoshi's Magmarashi) was the third Pokémon that Ash caught during his travels through Johto. Its Japanese voice actor is Yuji Ueda, and its English voice actress is Kayzie Rogers.

History

Johto

Quilava first appeared as a Cyndaquil in Good 'Quil Hunting. On the way to Azalea Town, Ash hears from a trainer named Koji that the forest he and his friends were traveling through was reputed to be populated by Cyndaquil and decides to look for one. Ash was separated from his friends and chased by Team Rocket into a cave where he found Cyndaquil. After competing with Koji and Team Rocket for it, Ash was able to capture it.

Personality-wise, Cyndaquil was the "baby" of Ash's group. It started off very weak and lazy, and was easily tired out. In battles, it usually had to wait for the flame on its back to ignite before using any Template:Type2 attacks. After training with Ash in Hot Matches!, Cyndaquil was able to ignite at will.

Cyndaquil was also very speedy in battle, able to dodge attacks with ease. When it was being pursued by Team Rocket's mecha in DP182, it was able to dodge it easily, unlike most other Pokémon Team Rocket tried to capture. Arguably, its most notable battle appearance was in the episode Nerves of Steelix. Cyndaquil took down Jasmine's undeniably powerful Steelix. It has also been used in most of Ash's Johto gym battles and it was able to get at least one win in all the matches, defeating Bugsy's Scyther, Whitney's Nidorina and Clefairy, Morty's Gastly, Jasmine's Steelix and Pryce's Dewgong.

Ash left Cyndaquil along with the rest of his Johto team at Professor Oak's Laboratory when he wanted to start his journey fresh in the Hoenn region.

Sinnoh

Ash called Cyndaquil back into his party for the Suzuran Conference in DP182. It was separated from Ash along with Bayleef, Totodile, Snorlax and Corphish when Team Rocket attempted to steal them. After finding the others, Cyndaquil was the only one left for Ash to search for. While looking for Ash, it was attacked by one of Team Rocket's mechas. During the battle, it showed that it had learned the move Flame Wheel during its time at the lab. When the mecha had Cyndaquil cornered, it evolved into Quilava and used its newly learned attack Eruption to destroy it.

In the following episode, Ash will use Quilava to battle Nando in the first round of the Suzuran Conference.

Trivia

Ash's Cyndaquil in its debut
  • With his capture of Chimchar, Ash now has owned each Fire-type starter whose English name begins with a C and whose Japanese name begins with a ヒ hi: Charmander, Cyndaquil, and Chimchar. Incidentally, Charmander and Chimchar were either abused or abandoned by their former Trainers, while Cyndaquil narrowly avoided being captured by a potentially abusive Trainer.
  • Cyndaquil's body color changed, like Corphish's BubbleBeam, over the course of the series. It started off with the top half being royal blue and the bottom half being cream, while later the top half was colored a mossy green and the bottom half was a deep cream.
  • Quilava, as a Cyndaquil, took the longest to evolve out of any Pokémon in the anime, having been in its first stage for longer than a decade.
  • Quilava is Ash's only Fire-type Pokémon that is not yet fully-evolved, and the only Fire-type starter to have been on the main cast without evolving fully.
  • Ash considered evolving Cyndaquil into Quilava before the Silver Conference in You're a Star, Larvitar!, which aired nearly 8 years before its actual evolution.
  • Before evolution, it was revealed that Cyndaquil learned Flame Wheel at some point before it was recalled, very similar to Torkoal learning Heat Wave before it was recalled.
