How is this not a plausible origin?
"Its shut eyes may also represent envy, one of the cardinal sins. In part two of Dante's Divine Comedy, Purgatorio, the punishment for being envious was to have your eyes sewn shut with wire."
Not only are its eyes are slit and closed it is also coincidentally is based off of the see-no-evil monkey, which is similar to the greed punishment. - 050294 05:54, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
- It's still too far fetched in my opinion. It's most likely a coincidence. --ケンジのガール 06:17, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
- As stated on your talk, the monkey motif was actually based on a mix of christian, in the case of the monkeys the cardinals, and shintoism lore. - 050294 06:24, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
- Looking at more Envy info, doesn't it seem Hiyakkie's dreads are sorta like Envy's hair here? I always thought Hiyakkie's dreads reminded me a bit of snakes. ★Jo the Marten★ ಠ_ಠ 08:44, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
- Oh also, found out that "envy" in Japanese is okayaki. Surely it's not just a mere coincidence...★Jo the Marten★ ಠ_ಠ 08:47, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

The sin envy is also associated with the Leviathan, a sea monster associated with water."St. Thomas Aquinas described Leviathan as the demon of envy, first in punishing the corresponding sinners" - 050294 09:09, 18 November 2010 (UTC) - 050294 09:09, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
I believe it is based on the monkey motif and hippies. - unsigned comment from Mewtwomaster (talk • contribs)
