Ash's Muk (Japanese: サトシのベトベトン Satoshi's Betbeton) was the ninth Pokémon caught by Ash during his travels through Kanto. Its Japanese voice actor is Unshō Ishizuka and its English voice actor is Michael Haigney.
Ash caught Muk in the episode Sparks Fly For Magnemite. Ash and his friends were traveling through Gringey City, which was in the midst of a power failure. The local power plant was being overrun by the mysterious Poison-type Pokémon Grimer. They were blocking the flow of water to the generators, causing the power failure. In order to stop the power outage, Ash, Misty, and Brock traveled to the abandoned power plant with a newly befriended Magnemite. When they got there, the Magnemite’s team of Magneton defeated the Grimer. After the swarm was taken down and all hope looked to be regained, the Grimer's leader, a large Muk, came and challenged the trainers. Ash ordered Pikachu and Magnemite to take it down and, after weakening it, Ash captured the Muk. Muk was then immediatly sent to Oak's lab because its stench was so rancid that it could seep through the Poké Ball. However, Muk's horrid smell seemed to have disappeared. In later episodes, neither Ash, nor anyone around him, was affected by it.
While at the lab, Muk grew an attachment to Professor Oak and seemed to be enjoying the environnment. Whenever the gang travels to the lab, Muk is almost always seen cuddling the Professor or enjoying the presence of Ash. So far, Muk has only been in two major battles since his capture in which he poisoned a high-level Bellsprout using Toxic and won the match for Ash. Muk also battled Gary Oak's Scizor in the Johto League.
