The following is a list of areas & items in HGSS that are initially beyond your reach but become accessible later after obtaining the appropriate HMs, badges, and/or the National Pokédex. Note that this does not list areas that are only visited after a needed HM is (or should have been) obtained.

Cut

• TM05 and hidden Super Potion on Route 32

Surf

• Nugget (accessed via pond on Route 30) and Mystic Water in Cherrygrove City
• Rare Candy and PP Up in Violet City
• South-east (second) chamber of the Ruins of Alph
• hidden Heart Scale on Route 32
• rest of Union Cave
  • Catch a Lapras on the lowest level of Union Cave on Fridays
  • Access the last two chambers of the Ruins of Alph (including a grass patch containing Natu and Smeargle) from Union Cave (Strength is also needed for the third chamber)
• rest of Slowpoke Well (Strength also needed)
• Big Mushroom in Ilex Forest
• Nugget and Rare Candy on Route 34
• trio of Ace Trainers on Route 34

• upper caverns of Mt. Mortar, along with Karate King Kiyo
• White Flute and tall grass on Route 47

After Obtaining the National Pokédex

• Swarms/mass outbreaks (announced on Oak's Pokémon Talk)
• Hoenn Sound plays on the Pokémon Music Channel on Wednesdays
• Sinnoh Sound plays on the Pokémon Music Channel on Thursdays
• Smashable rocks appear on the bottom floor of Cliff Cave that can yield Claw Fossils^{Wrong template. See Template:Sup/doc.} or Root Fossils^{Wrong template. See Template:Sup/doc.}, among other things
• more Pokéwalker routes become available
• more items are available at the Athlete Shop at the Pokéathlon Dome
• more species appear during the Bug-Catching Contest
• more species appear in headbuttable trees

After Obtaining All Sixteen Badges

• Get HM08 (Rock Climb) from Prof. Oak
• Get permission from Oak to access Route 28 & Mt. Silver and thereby battle Red
• Get the GB Sounds from a Game Freak employee in Celadon Condominiums
• Access Cerulean Cave
• The captain of the S.S. Aqua starts giving away plates
• Get a PP Max from a man in Vermilion City
• Zapdos appears outside the Power Plant
• Gym Leaders can be rematched

Rock Climb

• Nugget and a headbuttable tree containing Taillow in Cherrygrove City (Surf also needed)
• Shiny Stone and a headbuttable tree containing Cherubi in National Park
• Lax Incense, HP Up, and a headbuttable tree containing Burmy on Route 38
• hidden Rare Candy north-east of the Glitter Lighthouse
• Big Pearl and a pond in Cliff Edge Gate
• Wave Incense, Stardust, and the Embedded Tower on Route 47
• various items in Mt. Mortar
• Dubious Disc on Route 42 (accessed via Mt. Mortar)
• hidden PP Max on Route 45
• HP Up, Oval Stone, and Iron in Rock Tunnel
• Rock Incense, PP Max, and Calcium in Diglett's Cave
• Rare Candy, Iron, Star Piece, and Magmarizer on Cinnabar Island

After Defeating Red

• Get the Blue Orb^{Wrong template. See Template:Sup/doc.}/Red Orb^{Wrong template. See Template:Sup/doc.} from Mr. Pokémon to use in capturing Kyogre^{Wrong template. See Template:Sup/doc.} or Groudon^{Wrong template. See Template:Sup/doc.}
  • If both Groudon and Kyogre are brought to Prof. Oak, he will give you the Jade Orb for capturing Rayquaza.
• Get a Kanto starter from Prof. Oak.
• Get a Hoenn starter from Steven Stone at Silph Co.
  • Afterwards, after you meet Steven again at the Pewter Museum of Science, he goes back to Silph Co., where he will offer to trade a Beldum for a Forretress.
