• The plot for this episode is based on William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" play.
• The names of the two Nidoran, Tony and Maria, are taken from the musical "West Side Story" which is also based on Romeo and Juliet.
• This episode mentions that Ralph and Emily like to compete in Pokémon contests. Though it is unknown if these contests relate to the game contests.
• This is the 100th episode of the entire Pokémon anime, if Holiday Hi-Jynx and Snow Way Out are counted as episodes.
• When Jessie is talking about matters of the heart, her fantasy/flashback portrays her similarly to Scarlett O'Hara from the movie Gone with the Wind

Dub edits

• In the beginning of the episode, there is a dubbing error in which the narrator says Ash defeated Prima in the previous episode. In reality, Ash was actually defeated by Prima and not the other way around.
• When Nidoran♀ and Nidoran♂ evolve into Nidorina and Nidorino, Tracey and Ash's Pokédex identifies both incorrectly as Nidorina.
