Ash's Chimchar (Japanese: サトシのヒコザル Satoshi's Hikozaru) is a Pokémon owned by Ash. Chimchar is voiced by 林原めぐみ Megumi Hayashibara in Japanese and Bill Rogers in English.

Under the ownership of Paul, Chimchar was first seen in When Pokémon Worlds Collide. It had a fierce battle with Ash's Aipom. It fought long and well but lost in the end. Although it lost, Paul still believed in it and decided not to let Chimchar go.

Chimchar also reappeared in Different Strokes for Different Blokes and fought Ash's Turtwig and actually won this time. Before Ash's battle with Roark, Paul battled with Chimchar in Shapes of Things to Come but won even though Cranidos beat Chimchar.

It was assumed to be Paul's starter Pokémon until DP040, when it was revealed that Paul's starter Pokémon was a Turtwig. After losing to Cynthia's Garchomp, Paul realised that Chimchar was not filling his expectations.

During a three-episode arc in DP050, DP051 and DP052, Ash and Paul were forced to work together for a tag battle tournament. However, after Chimchar's constant losses, Paul released it in DP051. After this, Ash invited it to go with him.

In DP053, Chimchar notices it isn't used to the friendly atmosphere around Ash and his friends.

Trivia

  • This is Ash's third primate-based Pokémon, the others being Primeape and Aipom.
  • Chimchar being released by its uncaring original trainer, then being captured by Ash echoes a similar incident in Kanto, which resulted in Ash getting a Charmander.
  • Because of his capture of Chimchar, Ash now has owned each Fire-type starter whose English name begins with a C and whose Japanese name begins with a ヒ hi: Charmander, Cyndaquil, and Chimchar.
