This trick cannot only be done with Rare Candies, however, but other hard-to-obtain items. The most favorable items to copy are Master Balls, Nuggets, and expensive items such as Full Restores and Revives. It can also duplicate key items, like bicycles, which can be very hard to deposit after the first trick.

The Rare Candy Cheat is probably one of the most infamous glitches in the Generation I Pokémon games. It gives the trainer unlimited Rare Candies (or whatever item is in the sixth slot of the bag).

It is a side effect of the Missingno. bug, where the sixth item in a player's bag, not necessarily a Rare Candy, gets 127 copies of itself added. By using all of these but one and repeating the bug, the player can have an infinite amount of that item.

As the trainer will often encounter Pokémon over level 100 that are hard to escape from while executing the Missingno. glitch, it is a good idea to clone Poké Dolls.

Starting the Cheat

Requirements

 • A Pokémon that knows Fly.
 • A Pokémon that knows Surf.
 • Party members level 50 or higher
 • At least one Rare Candy.

Instructions

 1. Talk to the Old Man located North of Viridian City. Allow him to demonstrate how to catch a Pokémon.
 2. Once he is finished, Fly to Cinnabar Island.
 3. Make sure that the Rare Candy is in the sixth slot of the bag.
 4. Surf up and down along the east coast of the island where the water is touching the land. Whether Missingno. will appear or not depends on the player's name and other Pokémon may appear. Continue Surfing along the coast until Missingno. appears.
 5. Defeat, run, or catch Missingno..

Open the menu and view the items currently in the bag. If done correctly, there should be a pixel blob on the left of the Rare Candy where is usually indicates the amount, indicating that there are more than 99.

This trick cannot only be done with Rare Candies, however, but other hard-to-obtain items. The most favorable items to copy are Master Balls, Nuggets, expensive items such as Full Restores and Revives, or unique TMs such as TM26. It can also duplicate key items, like bicycles, which can be very hard to deposit after the first trick; the only exceptions are fossils and Old Amber, all of which can be revived until there are no more in the inventory.
