In a normal battle, the priority of a move is determined by the speed statistic of the Pokémon battling. However, there are moves with their own set priority.

Priority is a property of several moves and deals with the order of moves used in a turn. The most common type of priority-based moves are ones with increased priority. These moves will force the user to go first. Moves that give increased priority are generally damage dealing attacks that include {{m|Quick Attack}} and {{m|ExtremeSpeed}}. Some moves are always given priority and are typically effect based moves that last the duration of the turn, such as {{m|Protect}} or {{m|Magic Coat}}. There are also moves that always give priority because they are generally responses to the other Pokémon's moves, like {{m|Counter}} and {{m|Metal Burst}}. At each tier, all ties are settled by the Pokémon's Speed stat.
Priority based moves are moves that will go before other moves, such as {{m|Quick Attack}} and {{m|ExtremeSpeed}}, or after other moves such as {{m|Counter}} and {{m|Metal Burst}}. Moves that last a whole turn, such as {{m|Protect}} or {{m|Magic Coat}} will have much higher priority to ensure that the move is used at the start of the turn. When the priority of two moves is equal, such as both {{m|Aqua Jet}} and Quick Attack being used, the Pokémon with the higher speed will act first.

The priority for similar moves may be different, such as ExtremeSpeed and Quick Attack. If Quick Attack and ExtremeSpeed are used by two different Pokémon, ExtremeSpeed will go first as it has a higher priority than Quick Attack.

For example, take the hypothetical battle between a {{p|Snorlax}} and {{p|Flareon}} facing a {{p|Charizard}} and {{p|Deoxys}}. Their respective Speeds are 100, 200, 300 and 400. Snorlax uses Protect, Flareon uses Quick Attack, Charizard uses Counter and Deoxys uses Extremespeed. Despite having the lowest Speed, Snorlax goes first with Protect because the move is always given priority. Although Flareon used Quick Attack, an increased priority move, Deoxys used ExtremeSpeed, another increased priority move, and goes next because its Speed is higher than Flareon's. The last to move is Charizard. While its Speed is higher than Flareon's, it used a decreased priority move, Counter, and as such will always go last.

In a normal battle, the priority of a move is determined by the speed statistic of the Pokémon battling. However, there are moves with their own set priority.

Priority based moves are moves that will go before other moves, such as Quick Attack and ExtremeSpeed, or after other moves such as Counter and Metal Burst. Moves that last a whole turn, such as Protect or Magic Coat will have much higher priority to ensure that the move is used at the start of the turn. When the priority of two moves is equal, such as both Aqua Jet and Quick Attack being used, the Pokémon with the higher speed will act first.

The priority for similar moves may be different, such as ExtremeSpeed and Quick Attack. If Quick Attack and ExtremeSpeed are used by two different Pokémon, ExtremeSpeed will go first as it has a higher priority than Quick Attack.
