Gorebyss (Japanese: サクラビス Sakurabyss; German: Saganabyss; French: Rosabyss) is a Water-type Pokémon.
Pokédex entries
- Pokémon Emerald
- A Gorebyss siphons the body fluids of prey through its thin, tubular mouth. Its light pink body color turns vivid when it finishes feeding.
Name origin
Gorebyss's name is a combination of gore, to stab, and byss, referring to filaments mollusks use to attach themselves to rocks. Its name could also possibly be a play on gorgeous. Another explanation could lie with the words abyss and the abyssal zone. Gorebyss's descriptions seem to confirm this view.
Its Japanese name is derived from the Japanese sakura, cherry blossom, possibly referring to its pink color, and the aforementioned byss.
Gorebyss may have been based on a hagfish.
