Cyndaquil (Japanese: ヒノアラシ Hinoarashi) is a Fire-type Pokémon. Along with Chikorita and Totodile, it is one of the three starter Pokémon available at the beginning of the Generation II games. It is also available in Pokémon Emerald as an award for catching the first 200 Pokémon in the Hoenn Pokédex.
Cyndaquil comes with the Ability Blaze, which increases the power of Fire-type attacks by 50% once the Pokémon has less than one-third of its maximum HP.
Cyndaquil evolves into Quilava starting at Level 14, then into Typhlosion starting at Level 36.
Pokédex entries
- Pokémon Gold / Pokémon LeafGreen
- It is timid, and always curls itself up in a ball. If attacked, it flares up its back for protection.
- Pokémon Silver / Pokémon FireRed
- It usually stays hunched over. If it is angry or surprised, it shoots flames out of its back.
- Pokémon Crystal
- The fire that spouts from its back burns hottest when it is angry. The flaring flames intimidate foes.
- Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire
- Cyndaquil protects itself by flaring up the flames on its back. The flames are vigorous if the Pokémon is angry. However, if it is tired, the flames sputter fitfully with incomplete combustion.
- Pokémon Emerald
- It flares flames from its back to protect itself. The fire burns vigorously if the Pokémon is angry. When it is tired, it sputters with incomplete combustion.
Name origin
Cyndaquil's name is a combination of the words cinder, meaning ashes, and quill, referring to needlelike hairs. Hinoarashi could be taken to mean 火の嵐, storm of fire, but it is likely to also be based on 山荒 yama-arashi, porcupine.
Its appearance is based on the echidna.

When released from a Pokéball, Cyndaquil will aim a Flamethrower diagonally towards the ground in one direction. It is one of the easiest Pokémon to avoid, however.
