Mew (Japanese: ミュウ Mew) is a Psychic type Pokémon. It is usually obtainable only by having it transferred to your cartridge at special Nintendo-sponsored events. In Pokémon Emerald there is Faraway Island where you can capture Mew, but access to this island requires an Old Sea Map item which is also only available through special events.

Mew's ability is Synchronize, which copies any status ailments the Pokémon might have over to its opponent.

Mew has been notorious since its discovery for its ability to learn every machine and tutor move, unique amongst all known Pokémon.

Mew does not evolve from or into any other Pokémon.

Name origin

Mew's name refers to its cat-like appearance, with mew being the sound a kitten makes. It also refers to mew as being a "new" specie of Pokémon.

Mew shares some traits with felines. It is also similar to an animal embryo. It is purported to be the first Pokémon from which all others are descended, in the same way that all animal embryos look indentical at an early stage of development.

In the anime

Mew appeared in two Pokémon movies. In the first, Mewtwo Strikes Back, it engaged in a battle with its clone, Mewtwo. In the eighth movie, Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, Mew kidnapped Ash's Pikachu and Meowth. In the first movie, it was voiced by 山寺宏一 Kōichi Yamadera, while in the eighth, it was voiced by こおろぎさとみ Satomi Kōrogi.

A Mirage Mew appears in The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon, and helps to frustrate the plans of Mirage Master.

Red/Blue Versions

The Gameboy Advance games show that you must attend special Nintendo Events and download this pokémon and catch it on Faraway Island. However, the first-generation games (except for Pokémon Yellow), there is a step-by-step cheat to catch this elusive pokémon. Mew appears at a low level (for me it appeared at Lv:7).

The Cheat Here are some things to know and do before you start chasing Mew:

- If you have just learned about this cheat and you are playing pretty late in the game (i.e. if you are travelling through Cinnabar or challenging the Pokémon League), then it is best to start a new game as there are some importamt factors that must be left for this cheat (as will be revealled).

- You must make sure that you have at least three gym badges.

- You must make sure that you have a pokémon that knows Fly (HM02) in your party.

- Carry a good amount of Ultra balls or Great balls or you could also save your master ball for this pokémon.

-There is a trainer on Route 25 that must not be battled. He resides just off the right to the middle of tis route. He stands alone in a wide-ish patch of land that's surrounded by rocks.

-There is also another trainer on Route 8 that must not be battled. He is looking at the Route 8 underground building door.

Step 1- Save your game right outside the Route 8 underground building door whilst looking downwards. This is important as if you don't get this cheat right, Mew will be lost forever.

Step 2- Take one step down and press start quickly as a trainer will try to signal you to battle.

Step 3- Onced you have pressed start, open the pokémon menu and select the pokémon that knows Fly and fly to Cerulean City.

Step 4- Walk up to Route 25, to the boy described before. (IMPORTANT! He must approach you by walking upward towards you). Defeat him.

Step 5- Fly to Lavender Town.

Step 6- Walk from the Lavender Town Pokémon center to Route 8.

Step 7- The Start Menu should automatically pop up. Press B and begin to battle with Mew.

Other appearances

Super Smash Brothers Melee

After unlocking every character, there is a 1 in 251 chance of appearing. It does not affect the battle but the thrower of the Pokéball will earn a bonus 10,000 points and trophy of Mew.
