Legendary trio
A legendary trio is a term used to describe a group of three closely-related legendary Pokémon. Legendary trios can be subdivided into two tiers, normal trios and mascot trios. Normal trios, which are always the first legendaries that appear in any Pokédex order, are allowed into the many Battle Towers and other battle facilities. They are also the only Pokémon whose base stats total to 580. The mascot trios, whose name comes from the fact that all of them are version mascots, are not allowed in the Battle Tower, and are found close to the end of the Pokédex in the generation of their release.
Many trios, in addition to sharing at least one type, will far more commonly share their ability and base stat totals (though Rayquaza and Kyurem do not with the other members of their trios). All of the trios have a master who created them and/or is somehow able to exert control over them.

Trivia
- The lake guardians is the only trio whose members are all the same type. However, many other trios share types within the group.
- The Lake guardians are the smallest sized trio among these groups.
- The Muskateer trio is in fact a quartet with Keldio as the fourth member, just like the Three Muskateers were four with d'Artagnan.
- Randorosu is the only member of its trio, and of all normal trios, to not have a Base Stat Total of 580, having 600 instead. It is also quite divergent inside its own trio, with a quite different movepool and stat distribution.
- Lugia and Ho-Oh are the only legendary version mascots to not be part of a trio (Suicune, the mascot of Crystal, is not part of a mascot trio, but it is part of a trio anyway). However, their base stats and learnsets are quite similar to those of the unrelated Mewtwo, and said Pokemon may have influenced the creation of the third members in mascot trios such as Rayquaza, Giratina or Kyurem.
