Name Origin

Gumshoos seems to be a play on Gums (as in the mouth and likely a reference to its apparent older look) Mongoose, and a corruption of the term Gumshoe (a detective). Yamitora1 (talk) 13:31, 1 August 2016 (UTC)

I agree with all of this except the gums part. Think less that it "looks older" and more that it "looks like a detective" by its facial expression and pose. I don't even give a Schif (TalkContribs) 15:02, 1 August 2016 (UTC)
Just as long as people can stop saying that it looks like Donald Trump. Remember what happened to last Pokémon that was deliberately based off of a living person?--Pokencyclopedia (talk) 17:31, 1 August 2016 (UTC)
To be honest..... no I don't remember (nor do I agree with this Trump thing, but that's besides the point). I don't even give a Schif (TalkContribs) 17:46, 1 August 2016 (UTC)
I’m guessing he’s referring to Kadabra. It’s ability to bend spoons was similar to the famous psychic Uri Geller, who sued the Pokémon Company in 2000 for using his likeness in what he claimed was a parody. Kadabra has not been featured in the anime or trading card games for years due to a lack of an agreement being reached.
I personaly agree that any visual likeness to Donald Trump is merely a coincidence. Its prominent blond fur can easily pass for a dective's cap, with the brown fur along the side of its body being a trenchcoat. - Nintendo101 (talk) 00:43, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
Could it also be based on 'shoo'? As in telling someone to go away?

The "Deka" in the Japanese name could be the slang term for "detective" sometimes used in that language (as in the Super Sentai show Dekaranger). Starscream (talk) 18:59, 1 August 2016 (UTC)

Just one more thing... I'd argue that it being the "stakeout" Pokemon and its ability being "Stakeout" would greatly suggest it being based (and named after) a detective stick character. Masternachos (talk) 01:27, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
In spite of the fact that I myself make jokes about the similarities between Gumshoos and Trump, I would like to mention this character, who is literally named "Gumshoe". Aidan the Aura Master 02:26, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
Damn, I just hope, that Trump won't sue them like this scam artist Geller did, as the resemblance here seems to be more of a coincidence than anything deliberate like it was in Kadabra's case.--Arisboch (talk) 14:47, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
I think the Ace Attorney thing is just another coincidence. Dick Gumshoe is, much like Gumshoos, based off of a "detective stock character", as Masternachos said. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say they just so happened to use similar designs. I don't even give a Schif (TalkContribs) 14:58, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
"Dick" and "Gumshoe" have both been slang for detective since at least the 1920s, so the Ace Attorney character would not be so much a coincidence as it is an unrelated character derived from (and named after) the same generic stock character (much like Columbo, who I referenced in my first post); probably not so much as "happened to" use similar designs as intentionally imitated an older, well-known generic design. I think the eyelashes are just the style they use for detectives. The detective off Lupin the third had the same eye lashes. Gumshoos is just your run of a mill complement of various elements from the detective, hooligan/authoritative genres. nothing really else. I still think that the gums part might relate to age. I know gumming is another word for chewingYamitora1 (talk) 10:41, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
