Counterparts are pairs of Pokémon from different evolutionary trees that have several similarities that imply a biological or thematic connection, or otherwise were designed with several similarities.
Evolutionary Counterparts are much the same as normal counterparts, except are from a split evolution from a single evolutionary tree.
Criteria
In order to be considered counter parts, the following Pokémon must meet some of, but not all of these qualifications. Similar, identical, or opposite;
- Evolution methods.
- Gender Ratios.
- EV Yields.
- Designs or design origins.
- Type combinations.
- Stat distribution.
- Abilities.
- Alternate forms like Mega Evolution or Gigantamax forms.
Other factors include;
- Version exclusivity and complementary appearances.
- Legendary groupings.
- Close placements in the Pokédex.

Trivia
- In Generation I, Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan were considered normal counterparts. They then changed to evolutionary counterparts in Generation II when Tyrouge was introduced.
