Appendix:Red and Blue walkthrough/Section 3
Viridian Forest
Once inside the forest, there are a few areas to explore. To get another free item, go left and then up, following the path. To the left, hidden in the tall grass, is a Poké Ball. Go back to your starting point, and this time follow the path to the right. The first person you see won't have anything interesting to say, but the next person certainly will - he's your first non-Rival trainer battle!
After defeating him, continue north along the path, and you'll encounter a second trainer. After that battle, grab the nearby Antidote, and turn left into the tall grass. Work your way through the grassy maze until you see a signpost. Here, you'll want to head to the right to grab a Potion, and then back past the sign towards the tall grass. After one last trainer battle, you'll be at the northern edge of the forest. Leave the guardhouse and you'll be on Route 2.
Trainer | Pokémon | Winnings |
---|---|---|
Bug Catcher | Lv 6 Weedle, Lv 6 Caterpie | $60 |
Bug Catcher | Lv 7 Weedle, Lv 7 Kakuna, Lv 7 Weedle | $70 |
Bug Catcher | Lv 9 Weedle | $90 |
Route 2
There's not much to do here, so just head north and you'll be in Pewter City, home of the Pewter Gym, and your first badge!
Pewter City
First, make sure to visit the Pokémon Center to heal up from the trek through the forest. The two houses here don't hold anything important, but the Poké Mart does! This is the first city to sell Potions, so make sure to buy a few for the upcoming Gym battle. You won't be able to head east yet, since the kid at the edge of the city will drag you to the Gym if you try to leave. There isn't much else to do right now, so get ready for your first gym battle!
Pewter Museum of Science
The Pewter Museum of Science is located on the north side of the city. It hosts a wide range of artifacts and exhibits, with a focus on fossil excavation and space exploration. Admission to the main building is $50 for a child's ticket. The second smaller building is closed to the public, but if you come back later and cut past the tree, the scientists there will give you the Old Amber; if you take it to Cinnabar Island, then the scientists there can resurrect an ancient Aerodactyl.

POKéMON GYM
LEADER: BROCK
The Rock Solid POKéMON Trainer!
Okay, Gym #1. The Pewter Gym focuses on the Rock-type, so if you chose Bulbasaur or Squirtle, you'll be in good shape. Teams with Charmander may have some trouble here, since Fire-types are weak against Rock-type moves. Either way, make sure you've got a few Potions, and enter the first Gym.
Name | Pokémon | Winnings |
---|---|---|
Jr. Trainer | Lv 11 Diglett, Lv 11 Sandshrew | $220 |
Brock | Lv 12 Geodude, Lv 14 Onix | $1386 |
Congratulations, you've just won the Boulder Badge! The badge gives a slight Attack boost when in battle, and also lets you use Flash outside of battle (even though you don't have HM05 yet). Brock also gives you TM34 (Bide) as a prize. Now that you've beaten Brock, your next destination is Cerulean City. Stock up on Poké Balls and Potions before you leave for Route 3, then it's off to the wilderness again!
