They will be released on the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U respectively in 2014. As with previous installments, characters from various Nintendo video games will do battle with each other. The game will also include characters from third-party games such as Mega Man, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Pac-Man. The 3DS version released on September 13 for Japan, and is set to release on October 2 for Germany, October 3 for North America and the rest of Europe, and October 4 for Australia, and the Wii U version set to be released in winter 2014.
The game has 49 confirmed playable characters. Pikachu, Lucario, Charizard, Greninja, and Jigglypuff are the playable Pokémon. Trophies are also set to return and most of them will be exclusive to either handheld games for the 3DS version or home console games for the Wii U version.
Gastly, Koffing, Petilil, Chandelure and Cryogonal will appear in the Nintendo 3DS Smash Run mode as enemies.
