The Clear Bells (Japanese: とうめいなスズ Transparent Bells), are bells installed in the Tin Tower. In the English dub of the Pokémon anime they're misnamed as Crystal Bells.

In the games

In Pokémon Crystal, the Clear Bell is given by the director of Johto Radio Tower. It allows the player to battle Suicune at the bottom of Tin Tower. Suicune will not flee and the player will be unable to leave as well.

The Clear Bell reappears in Pokémon HeartGold. It is given by the Kimono Girls and is used to summon Ho-oh. It's not available in Pokémon SoulSilver where its counterpart, the Tide Bell which is used to summon Lugia takes its place.

In the anime

In the anime, Crystal Bells were said to announce the coming of Ho-Oh. They were stolen and broken by Team Rocket which precipitated the events of For Ho-Oh the Bells Toll.

The bells appear to have magical properties as the Pokémon were able to sense that they were stolen. They were also built in a way that they cannot be rung by force. How it is made that way is still unknown.

Trivia

  • The Japanese name of the Tin Tower (スズのとう) can mean both "Tin Tower" and "Bell Tower". This double meaning was impossible to be reflected in the English version, though.
