The Clear Bells (Japanese: とうめいなスズ Transparent Bells) are bells installed in the Tin Tower. In the English dub of the Pokémon anime, they are mistakenly called Crystal Bells.

In the games

In Pokémon Crystal, the Clear Bell is given to the player by the director of Goldenrod Radio Tower. It allows the player to battle Suicune on the first floor of the Tin Tower. Suicune will not flee, and the player will also be unable to leave.

The Clear Bell reappears in HeartGold, but in completely different circumstances; in this game, it is received from the Kimono Girls and used to summon Ho-Oh. It is unavailable in SoulSilver where its counterpart, the Tide Bell (which is used to summon Lugia), takes its place.

In the anime

In the anime, Crystal Bells were said to announce the coming of Ho-Oh. They were stolen and broken by Team Rocket, which precipitated the events of For Ho-Oh the Bells Toll.

The bells appear to have magical properties as the Pokémon were able to sense that they were stolen. They were also constructed in such a way that prevented them from being rung by force. How they were made that way remains unknown.

In the manga

The Clear Bells were obtained by Crystal in hopes of being able to catch Suicune, but it still did not allow her to catch it and it had her confidence shattered.

Trivia

  • The Japanese name of the Tin Tower (スズのとう) can mean both "Tin Tower" and "Bell Tower"; however, this double meaning was unable to be reflected in the English version.
