Humans are a species that live in the Pokémon world. They are found in all regions barring those used as the setting for Mystery Dungeon games and Pikachu's Adventure, although games in the Mystery Dungeon series feature once-human protagonists as well as Pokémon that were once human, e.g., Gengar, the leader of Team Meanies. The Pokémon anime and main-series games revolve around the relationship between humans and their Pokémon.
Unlike the relationship between humans and animals in the real world, that between humans and Pokémon is almost universally portrayed as one of complete genetic distinction. A notable exception to this practice exists in Sinnoh myths, where it is said that humans and Pokémon once coexisted as a single species (possibly as a collective of Mews or Mew-like creatures). Members of this species transformed or mutated often, shifting between a human or proto-human form and a Pokémon or proto-Pokémon form. Eventually, this species evolved (in the Darwinian sense), diverging into both modern humans and the various species of Pokémon seen today. Additional exceptions to the otherwise clear-cut distinction made between humans and Pokémon include Desumasu, a species of ghost Pokémon whose members used to be humans, as well as those species of Pokémon that fit within the Humanshape egg group.
Humans are the dominant species in the Pokémon world and have achieved a level of technology unparalleled by any other species on the planet. Much of human technology appears to be based around the concept of human-Pokémon relations; this includes the ubiquitous as the Poké Ball, as well as teleportation and data transfer systems designed to store and move captured Pokémon at their Trainer's convenience. Humans have also created artificial Pokémon, such as Porygon, a product of artificial intelligence programming and light manipulation, and Mewtwo, a powerful clone of Mew.
