Poffins are similar to Pokéblocks in the sense that they raise either the: Beauty, Tough, Cute, Cool, or Smart quality of a Pokémon in a contest. The main difference between Pokéblocks and Poffins is the way that poffins are created.

To create a poffin you must already have at least one berry in your berry list. Once you obtain a berry go to Hearthome City (the city where Super Contests are held) and go to the house where poffins are made (it is next door to the Pokémon Center). Go to the table with the machine on it. Talk to the woman and she will ask you if you want to make a poffin alone or in a group. When you first start Pokémon Pearl/Diamond you may not have already connected with other people via wireless or Wi-Fi Connection yet. If this is the case then pick ALONE. After choosing to either make a poffin alone or in a group you will see a yellow circle on your bottom screen and the list of berries you have on your top screen. Choose a berry. When you choose which berry you want to use a blinking stlyus will be shown on the bottom screen. Click it and then rotate your stylus either clockwise or counter-clockwise (depending on which direction you are instructed to rotate). After a number of rotation changes the yellow batter will soon turn brown and spotted. Congratulations, you now have your first poffin!
